Battery drain for 830 when switched off?

The battery lifetime when the device is on is really great. However, when I switch it off completely (i.e. Power off - not sleep!) battery drains completely. I did not remember this behaviour from my Edge 810....

Is there some setting I need to pick? Does the Edge wake up and does some updating in the background? I cannot imagine this, but still would like to know.

  • This happened to me when I first got the 830 but it was because coming from an 800, I didn't know about sleep mode so I just pressed the power button thinking it was turned off.  Sleep isn't powered down so it's not completely surprising that it will drain the battery if it's still connected or trying to maintain connections.

I generally leave it plugged into my PC when not in use but I have powered it down for a few days to test and it doesn't seem to lose the charge.   I always leave my connections on my iPhone active so that it detects the edge when I turn it on.  I am not sure what you mean by leaving the sensors activated.  I don't turn them off either.  When I turn on the 830 it connects to my phone and sensors.

I'm planning a back to back century weekend in June (one of the reasons for buying the 830 was better battery) so I'll have to test this more but for the moment, it looks like it might be a hardware issue on some units.

  • Today something strange happened. I came home yesterday night from Biking, synced the Garmin and definitly switched it off (i.e. power off). Was around 18:00 yesterday. This morning at 9:30 I wanted to start to bike again - well, my Garmin has been on, recording an activity since 16 hours!!

In fact, the activity started around the same time I switched it off, which I find very bizarre. Meaning, I switched iit off, the it restarted and started to record an acitivity….

Anyone has an explanation/idea for this?

EDIT: ok, I now saw I had the unit set on autostart an activity from a certain speed onwards. I now switched this to prompted. However, if the unit is switched off, it should still not start on its own?

I can confirm that the battery drains within hours in POWER OFF mode if WIFi is left on. We need a FIX from GARMIN !

I totally agree. Why is GARMIN not replying to this topic? This is ridiculous for such an expensive device!

  • The overnight battery drain happened to me several times, but there was not power off icon stuck on the screen. The screen was totally black. But I have noticed that it always happened when I did not switch off radar and let it sleep.

  • Same happend to me multiple times now. I always use the power off mode.

I'm actually pretty upset, because I sold the real champion the edge 810, as this behavior from the 830 was not there in November and December. Due to injury i have only cycle a few times indoors. Every time i want to go outdoors I get surprised by a battery drained. Especially now with Covid-19 measures in effect a drained battery means not cycling that day.

I don't understand why Garmin does not take action and does not respond to a 6 month old treat with so many experiencing the same. How hard can it be to program power of, to shut down all connections (if that is actually the case). Can't imagine they use a battery that bad and that old it will drain when powerd of. That would be a battery choice for a 10 dollar device or a device from 1970's.

Hi, I had the same problem and it really upset me. Although I didn’t have much faith in the suggestion, I followed the advice from local Garmin support and did 2 things: device reset and update to 5.10. It was a pain to get it all up again, but the battery drain problem has actually disappeared. My previous workaround l, to disable WiFi, is no longer needed. I now keep WiFi on always and battery life is super during active use and no drainage while off.
    Problem solved !

  • thx, will try. Already had 5.1. So performing a reset and do the settings all over again. Webupdater did not allow reinstall of 5.10, so hope the problem is not in the install

  • Don't do the setting all over again. Just save appropriate .fit file with the setting and copy them into the NewFile folder after the HW reset.

  • When did you try this? The problem is still solved? I just want to make sure your solution works permanently before resetting my device.
