Trailforks Update Frequency and Methods

Does anyone happen to know if these maps will be updated about the same frequency as the basemaps?  (Say, maybe bi-annually?)  I was considering making it a point to copy some of the more rare (less traveled) 'national forest' bike trails over to the Trailforks network.  They're already in the MTBProject database, but that team won't even reply to me any longer regarding a potential ConnectIQ app.  (Up until a year ago they were telling me it was in the works, now my inquiries go ignored). I currently make my own basemaps using 3rd party software for some of the missing trails, but if there will be updates to the TF maps, it may be worth taking the time to get what I want into their network.

FYI - I'm not talking about copying gpx files from another service.  To be proper I'd probably download PDFs from park services and trace their maps in topofusion.

If anyone knows of a better / easier way I'd be interested.

Note - a TON of the trails I refer to are already in OSM, so they do show on the garmin device (unless zoomed in with MTB profiles, in which case the Trailforks maps will render while the device declutters OSM.  Not a 'huge' deal to zoom out and look around.  But OSM doesn't seem to differentiate hiking from biking (kind of important in strict areas), and it's nice to have the width of the TF data rendered.   I'm not familiar with working in OSM or if there is a way to export that data (or if it's allowed).

So today I logged into Pinkbike and downloaded the three states of trails I had purchased with Karma points.  The filenames show they are last updated August 2019 for each of the three states.

This means they are currently newer and contain more trails than the Garmin basemaps with Trailforks data.  I'm curious if anyone in touch with Garmin has heard detail as to the update frequency of the Garmin Trailforks map data?

I'd prefer to just stick with the Garmin basemaps since the layer ID tends to put them on top of any 3rd party maps I load anyway.  This leaves one having to manually download each GPX file for the missing trails and leave it as 'always on' under courses...which sort of looks almost okay.  I'll probably keep doing this for now.

*Edit* - I just launched Garmin Express and it looks like an update for basemaps just came out - 2019.20

However the Trailforks map is still 2019.10  (I wonder if this means an update will be coming soon)?

  • Any news on Trailforks Map update?? Still 2019.20!!
