Feature Request: Downloading Routes/gpx files during activity

This has been a long bug-bear of mine for all the Garmin Edge devices I've owned. I just upgraded to the 830 this weekend and was looking forward to seeing this issue finally put to rest, but no!

I love Dynamic Watch app which sits under the IQ apps and we still can't run IQ apps once an activity has started after all these years. But I'm not fussy - I'd be happy to be able to load a new online route any which way without having to cancel the current activity. I know I can stop, download and start a new activity and then join the fit files at home but that's a very clunky solution.

I noticed that Trailforks is now integrated into the front-end of the device and can load cloud-based routes on the fly - is it simply a matter of integrating Garmin Connect or Strava or Dynamic Watch or... (basically I'll take any option) via firmware update? If so, please Garmin - please add this feature for all of us who use our Edges out in the wild. As long as I can import a gpx file on-the-fly, I'll be a very happy camper.

Other than that, the 830 is pretty schmick!

  • Is this only an issue if you haven't downloaded the ride prior to your ride starting? That is, if you download the ride onto your 830 prior to starting your ride and then go to pick the ride from those already on the device after starting won't that work? I have a bolt that lets you download a new ride mid-ride, but I do like my new 830 as the screen is larger, easier to see, and has other very nice features. But when you ride to the start of a group ride this "broken into two rides" issues is a real pita.

  • All the Garmin units let you choose a route/course that is already on the device during a ride.

  • Sorry to revive an old thread, but I was searching for the same functionality as the Original Post. I see that I could use routecourse mid-ride, according to this thread, to change courses, but will that allow the strava segments to appear as I cross them? One of the main reasons I wanted to load the route with Strava route IQ app was because of the segment data that comes along with it. Otherwise, I'd have just downloaded my strava route GPX files and loaded them into Garmin, but as I understand, I'd lose the segment data...

  • You are correct that downloading a route (course) mid-ride using the beta widget version of routeCourse does not include Strava live segment data.  Additional data usable by the Garmin such as course points and elevation data (for ClimbPro) are including however.
