Screen halo

My screen has a halo around it that you can see when the backlight is off - like a film on the screen is delaminating from the edges inward. Is this something that I need to send to Garmin to replace?
  • Oh cwap. Happening to mine too. Am in Melbourne Australia....

    Havent contacted Garmin Australia yet....
It is functioning perfectly apart from the halo bit.

Am not comforted to read above that they dont are not playing nice :-(
  • My Edge 820 had been replaced because of a HALO screen, about 10 months after purchase. You guess, the same HALO have started developing at "new" refurbished 820 unit after 6 months... Which a stable quality!

Removed. I had thought my wife's 820, purchased in November 2016, was halo-free, but it isn't. It's nowhere near as bad as my nominally 1 week older model, but it's got the beginnings of a halo all the same.

how did you go? also in australia

I didn’t. Incredibly disappointed with Garmin. They wanted me to buy a refurb unit as I couldn’t find my receipt. Sold it at a big discount and bough an Element Bolt which I am incredibly happy with. That said, I have bought Vector 3 pedals so I clearly havent learnt my lesson!
  • I have the screen halo too, which is evident when there is no backlight on. That's obviously the display status for 99% of our rides. I'm not saying the following is the right answer, but when riding with the 820 powered by an external battery, the backlight will stay on during the ride and the battery will stay at 100%. It's the same look as when I am charging the unit in the house from my computer - backlight is on and no halo shows. There is a separate thread on external battery usage that some of us have contributed to. I don't normally ride with an external battery connected, but it does work well. The halo on my unit is only bad at certain sun angles and not enough bother for me to ride with external power attached. The thread is at https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/cycling/edge-820-aa/1348395-recommendations-for-an-external-battery-pack-while-riding
  • Spoke to customer service and they offered up a refurb replacement for $110 since its out of warranty. I'd have to send mine in then they'd send a replacement (turn around time of 10-14 days). I've never been so disappointed with a purchase. I could understand them not wanting to replace if I had cracked the screen or abused it, but its in good condition still. I'm gonna ride it out then just buy a Wahoo.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1478273.jpg

Just ask for the Edge 830 for $110 instead, since the 820 has some serious hardware design bugs, that shouldn't be there, considering the price you gave initially. The 820 is not worth that kind of money! I am waiting for my 3 unit at this moment. The next time I will ask for an exchange price to the 830, but that unit is also way to expensive....
  • I'm not sure what was worse, the halo on the 820 or the customer service rep not knowing about such a widely documented phenomonen.
    I was none-the-less offered a refurb 820 for £100 or so.

Yes, that is a shame. Where I live, the service is excellent. Returned my unit Friday, and today Monday, they sent me a new one under warranty.
