Feature Request: Make discarded rides available for a time afterwards

Yesterday, I had my first ride out of the year. Unknown to me , at the cafe stop, my gloves were touching the screen and discarded my ride...I know this because I noticed as the recovery time screen came up and the first half of the ride was missing when I got home. I'm sure I can't be the only one for this to happen to.

I'd like to see discarded rides saved for, say, 7 days after being discarded to save the frustration of losing rides. They could be put in a discarded rides folder so that they're not uploaded to Garmin Connect, unless they're uploaded manually or even moved back to the 'activities' folder. I can't imagine that this would be a difficult thing to do and would save frustration for users. If there are lots of people saying they don't see the need for it, it could be made an option in settings.
  • you CAN , sort of, do this.

the file will exist and can be undeleted using windows tools.

I've tried it. it MIGHT work sometimes. Other times, most likely all the time, you will also have to fix the FIT file that you have undeleted. It may involve deleting certain records line by line. (I posted about it somewhere)

so what I am saying is that if it is REALLY important you can maybe do it.
But otherwise it will be a LOT of potential effort with no guarantee of success

I appreciate that you are asking, effectively, for it to be saved but hidden.
  • ...the basic trashcan concept, as has existed in some OSs and on some devices (like my DVR) for a long time.

    Yes, just that! :)

Thanks, I did try that, but alas it was already gone. When it's so easily to accidentally discard a ride, it wouldn't harm to save the last 3 discarded rides or save anything discarded for a week or something like that.

what about having an option to save by default when we press the cross mark? or better, stop and save immediately if we do a long press on the stop button ? this would save me some button presses, save a lot of time when ending an activity, eliminate the risk for error and we could still delete courses from the history if really needed...

I seldom need to delete an activity (which I only do if I press start by mistake), I really don't see why I have to confirm I want to save an activity each time, especially if the activity is several hours long! (btw, Polar has a rather neat way to do that: we only see the save/delete dialog if the activity is very short, otherwise, it saves by default...)

The reset & save process on the Edge 500 was to hold the Reset button for 3 seconds. If the activity was unwanted it was necessary to look up the activity and delete it afterwards.

I've not had any issues saving an activity yet but i'm conscious that a clumsy press on the screen or a screen error could delete my ride.

The previous method was simple and worked for me for years - perhaps something similar could be introduced as an optional method on the 820?

    +1 on that suggestion

right now a long press stops the activity and displays the save/discard menu: I don't need to see that and prefer it the way it was on the Edge 500.
  • With a touch screen as finicky as the Edge 820's, it shouldn't display a delete icon that can be so easily activated. The default behavior should be to save the data by default, and to make deleting it a deliberate effort, like the Garmin 800 does.

The funny thing (sarcasm) is that sometimes i delete the activity (while testing the gps indoors) and, guess what, the activity appears on my ride history/totals... This device is a joke. If i could i would return it, but im way past the 30 day return point.

    NOTE: im on 5.20
