Turn by turn nav depiction 810 vs 820

I used to have an Edge 810 with City Navigator maps on an SD card and have just upgraded to the 820 with the pre-loaded mapping.

On the 810 when approaching a turn you would be presented with a zoomed in depiction of the junction on the map as you approached, entered and left it. This would appear even when viewing another (non map) screen. I found this very helpful and reassuring, in knowing that I was taking the right exit of a complex roundabout, for example.

Now on the 820 this feature appears to be absent and instead generic symbols indicating which turn or exit to take appear, but without an actual depiction on the map popping up. To view this you have to switch to the map page itself by swiping to it.

Am I missing a way in which this old 810 feature can be enabled on the 820, or was this a features of City Navigator mapping only? As an aside, I know that the Edge 1000 has pre-installed maps like the 820 but retains the SD slot which is absent in the latter. Has anyone used an Edge 1000 and if so do you know if the feature above is available on that a) with internal or b) with SD mapping installed?

Thanks!

That feature is not available on the 820. You are not missing anything and if the unit supports it it is available with any map.
  • Thanks for that. So far at least the 820 doesn't crash all the time and dump my ride data like the 810 did - and that is a feature that I can put up with a lot for!
  • Are you sure you have turn guidance enabled? It is turned off by default.
  • It is on the 1000 with the internal [Garmin] map. It's not on the 820. I had an 1000, and I'm misging that feauture om the 820
  • The feature is there but you have to turn it on. Review some of the forum posts and you will find others have asked the same question.
Watch the video link. Is this what you are referring to?

My old Edge 705 and every vehicle GPS I've used have pop-up detailed intersection depictions with the route plotted through it. The 820 doesn't to that. It only depicts the turn overlying the existing map display. This is inferior to those other devices.
  • It might be Garmins solution to the numerous problems they have (had) with TBT in general (for all their cycle devices)
  • Evidently it's not a solution as TBT still doesn't work reliably. I think the problems go much deeper than that. And, TBT worked great on the archaic 705 with pop up intersection depictions.
  • Let's re-phrase myself:

It might be a try by Garmin to solve to the numerous problems they have (had) with TBT in general (for allmost all their cycle devices).
  • I think Garmin has included too many features and gizmos into latest cycling computers since 705. No one knows how much more code these new things have brought. Possibilities for malfunctions are far greater than before. Garmin has also made wrong decisions, e.g. too rigorous route tracking while navigating. I hope they will some day introduce a new basic device without all these BT and wifi toys.
