Navigating a course - loses the course and directs to start

First the good news - I have the latest firmware and have found the route recalculation works well. Today I tested it by ignoring a left turn on my route. I took a different road so that I would join up with my planned route a mile further on. The 820 initially asked me to do a U turn but as I re-approached my original route, it realised and directed me back to join that route.

Now the bad news - I have a different problem. On two occasions in the past week, the 820 has briefly said 'Off Course' when I'm not off course. It has then very quickly said 'Proceed to XXX road' (where XXX is the name of a road from much earlier in the course). Even though I am continuing to follow the course, it will not recognise this and simply keeps saying 'Proceed to XXX road'.

I have tried stopping navigation and then re-selecting the course. However, it then still tries to direct me to XXX road and won't seem to recognise that I am actually on the course.

The map continues to move and I can actually see my course on the screen and continue to follow it visually. However, the navigation prompts don't come up and the 'distance to next' etc doesn't work.

Has anyone else experienced this and/ or have a solution?

The first time was 15 miles into a 100 mile sportive - which was particularly annoying.

Thanks

Dave
  • RWGPS GPX routes have worked for me too. I used GPX with an old 705 for years and TCX on a 500. When I got the 820, I just used RWGPS GPX files as I had with the 705, the notion being GPX were the files that had worked with 705 nav. I may have tried a few TCX files on the 820, but I don't recall at this point.

I'm having the same issue. Since I've updated to 4.10 the turn by turn instructions and distance to destination became useless during every ride I've had.

It happens when I slightly deviate off course, a few meters seems to be enough sometimes. After I had the 'off course' notification distance to next becomes 0, distance to destination seems to become about the distance of the full course - sometimes almost double that. Have not figured out the logic behind it yet, assuming there is any. Could be distance to start of the course plus distance of the full course, but sometimes it's less than that from some reason.

The turn by turn instructions just keep telling me to proceed to my destination road.

The course is displayed fine on the map, I can follow it and - what I find interesting - is that it *will* still beep and tell me I'm off course when I deviate from the displayed course. It also recalculates and tells me to make a u-turn. When I get back on course I get 'course found' - but the problems above remain, still no turn by turn and still no distances.
  • Good evening,
Is there any evolution on this tread? It becomes boring!!!
The most annoying with this problem is it never comes with my old 800 so there must be for sure a good and not to complicated way to resolve this issue!
Again today, I was for sure on the route and suddenly ... hop... a street near to my home and the distance to destination from the total track (about)!
And the most irritant comparing with the Edge 800 is that the situation is strictly the same when I restart and check not going to start.
Other ways some other ride I can go out the route do a huge detour and when I am back on the track the 820 found immediately and with the correct information and guidance ...
Has somebody found the holy solution???
    Best regards

I only experienced a similar thing with 4.10 firmware.

It was like this: i put it on navigation mode to my home. During the trip, instead of following the route the gps was giving me, i decided to go through the route i usually take. The gps would keep telling me to make a U-turn and would not recalculate the course according to the new route i was taking.

I have not yet tried doing it with the 5.10 firmware. I may try it tonight to see if it will recalculate automatically or just keep telling me to make the U-turn.

Now, perhaps a stupid question... is there somebody or somebody that know somebody who do never has a problem with the Edge 820 guidance ?
If no, please Garmin do something ... and I mean something else then tell me to send you the device !!!
  • How do we get reimbursed for out Beta tester fees?

You don't. This things are not even in Beta when released but are still in Alpha.

What bugs me the most is that with every new device the same errors return over and over and over again...
And then they get solved (after along time of waiting and if you're lucky) and then when a new device comes out these same old errors pop-up their ugly head again.

I do not understand what you mean with Beta/Alpha???
Honestly I do not remind any trouble like this with my 800
The only thing I was disappoint comparing with the 705 was the track colour you can choice and stay visible when you where navigating (it is still not so on the 820) in fact if I remember well the purple was doubling with the colour you choice, I found that very useful ...
But let us stay with those routing problems
  • Nothing news out there?
I made two ride with no fail, by the third I made a try to change the route by an other on the same road 40 km from home ... nope! routing turn to turn didn't restart, in a first time "Distance to end" was correct(?) but after a while again the total of the track appears !!!
But the route is show and the cursor works correct, strange !!??
    :mad::mad::mad:
  • Just upgraded from 810 to 820???

Just changed over from my 810, which worked fine, but was getting a bit outdated to the 820 and my first ride with a 40 mile course in GPX format from Strava failed after about half the ride. All of a sudden no more TBT directions, but the map of the course looked fine. My 810 never had these issues. Maybe 820 goes back until they get it more stable, seems like basic functionality like this should just work.
  • I have reformatted and factory reset my 820 and today I went out and the navigation was worse than ever.

I left my route once and it was OK.

I then left my route again briefly and it started recalculating me and directing me to different places on my route (not necessarily near where I was).

Having rejoined my route, it started directing me to different places on my route - seemingly in a random way. At one point it redirected me to a road I was about to reach but, even when I reached it, it carried on trying to send me to different places.

    I've really had enough.
