Wi-Fi Not Connecting on Edge 820

Hi Edge 820 users!

I seem unable to connect wi-fi to perform an automatic upload. The behaviour appears erratic. Sometimes it will silently not connect. Other times, it will crash the device. I'm running the latest firmware at this time (3.1) and have performed a factory reset.

To reproduce the issue (from a factory reset device):

* Connect the device to my mac and run Garmin Express
* Configure a Wi-Fi network and sync the device
* Confirm that Wi-Fi is on, auto-upload is enabled and my network configuration is present on the device (Settings, Wi-Fi, My Networks)
* Record an activity
* Status bar at top of screen shows Wi-Fi icon with "Searching" (suggesting it is at least attempting to automatically upload)
* No upload occurs (or device occasionally crashes)

Separately, when displaying the status screen (by swiping down from the home page), the wi-fi section is blank, suggesting it isn't connected. Hitting the refresh icon results in a "Searching" message being displayed, but the device never successfully connects.

Oddly, I swear that the device successfully connected in the past - perhaps with the original version of the firmware that shipped with the device?

Is anyone else experiencing similar issues?
  • I cannot get mine to connect either. I have tried setting up the Wi-Fi using Garmin Connect and also on the device itself. When I set it up on the device it always says failed to connect. I have tried this on three different wireless networks. I just received my Edge 820 yesterday and I'm running 3.2. So far I have been unable to get it onto a wireless network. I would really like to get Strava Segments on here!
  • Some Success

Since my last post I've made some progress and have now successfully connected to my wi-fi network. It's a bit convoluted, but appears to work. Here goes:

    - Perform a factory reset
    - Attempt to add a wi-fi network on the device (Settings, Wi-Fi) (note that you can't do so on the device and are directed to use Garmin Express)
    - Use Garmin Express to add a wi-fi network
    - Note device won't connect to wi-fi
    - From the device, remove the wifi network
    - From the device, re-add the network you just removed

    Success!
  • Confirmed - this worked for me too.

    .....
  • Works?

I performed this enjoying process with positive results. My question is does the unit have a constant connection within the range of Wi-Fi or does it only connect briefly when uploading activities?
  • It only connects briefly while transferring data.
  • Wi-Fi Not Connecting on Edge 820

If I remove the connection and re-add it (from the device) I'm then only able to connect momentarily. The device appears to connect but remains unresponsive...then, about 10 seconds later it crashes and restarts. Upon restarting, it does not attempt to connect. Tapping on the wifi refresh button just causes another crash and restart.

Mine was doing the same and a factory reset fixed it.
  • Wi-Fi Crashes

I'm exactly where Peter Aquino is -- even after factory reset, my wifi tries to connect, maybe does, and then crashes the entire unit. Fortunately, it's not a feature I care about enough, but it's truly annoying to have it be so messed up. I should know better, it's Garmin. Will do a lengthy Amazon review after more testing. So far, the only other real problem is the lag in calculating gradient -- which may be hardware and/or software -- who knows? Much worse than my Edge 800 in this regard.

That is Right. But it is not possible to force a Transfer.

At the Edge 1000 in Protokoll (don't know how the name is with English edge language settings)there is the possibility to force a Upload if any not me t uploaded activity is there.

This is with the Edge 820 not possible.
  • You can force wifi connection by accessing the connections screen the one where you swipe down, scroll to the bottom and choose the circular arrow icon from the wifi selection and this will trigger the sync via wifi.
