Getting courses over to Edge 820 via WiFi?

Anyone know how to transfer courses over to the 820 via WiFi? When travelling, I often want to load courses from other sites like MapMyRide or BikeMap or MTB Project which allow downloads of GPX files. In the past, I've had to bring a laptop along just to do this but was hoping since this unit has WiFi, I would be able to transfer a course from either my iPad or iPhone to the unit directly. Anyone done this or know how?

Thanks, Jan
  • The only way i know to wirelessly transfer a course to the Edge 820 is the course must exist in your Garmin Connect account online.

Is there a way to get a gpx file from another site to your Garmin Connect account?

I think this may work. You import your GPX file as an activity in Garmin Connect. When that's done, you go to that particular activity and you click on the gear icon on the top right. It has an option to save it as a course.

    Thanks for the info.

If anyone from Garmin is monitoring this: Please, please, please make this process easier. It's sad that the process of getting routes onto my device, despite there being both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity on this device, is no easier than 5 years ago when I purchased my Edge 800. This really needs to be fixed so that it can be done easily from an iphone or ipad. I would bet that most people on this forum who purchased a navigating GPS did so to be able to follow routes that they upload. I understand from reviews that the competition, like the Wahoo Elemnt, can do this with ease making this an attractive option for many.

Please Garmin, don't be a closed system without having the goods.
  • OK, so I've figured it out thanks to some posts in the Edge 1000 subforum. Thanks to mcinner1 and DAVID.MEI over on this post https://forums.garmin.com/archive/index.php/t-324675.html

"Garmin Connect Mobile does the Job. The easiest is if you plan the trip directly on connect, than you can send it to the device via bluetooth.

    Another possibility:
    1) upload the file (previously saved on dropbox/onedrive/google drive) on garmin connect to the activities using the web-interface (not the app)
    2) open the app, the new activity and save it as a course
    3) send the course to the device via bluetooth

This should work theoretically, I often have the problem that the gpx-file cannot be uploaded to garmin connect and sometimes it's not possible to send the course to the device, don't know yet the reasons of failure, it seems quite random to me..."

The key is to download the iCab mobile app onto the ipad. This app has a built in download manager and lets you download a gpx file from another website directly onto the ipad, and then from the download manager button, you save it to your dropbox. From there, you need to make sure it has the .gpx suffix, so rename if necessary. Then go over to the Garmin Connect website, not app, and go to your activities page and on the right side of the page is a button to "import" which lets you choose the file from dropbox. Go ahead and upload the file into your Connect account. Open the file in connect by clicking on it in your activity list and on the far upper right side of the page is a gear button which has the option to "save as course." Go ahead and do that and then when you sync your device with Garmin Connect it will now be available on your Edge device.

    Simple, right?

Come on Garmin. Please make this easier. But at least it's doable now.
  • Maybe a bit late, but you can now also use routeCourse. It basically it a ConnectIQ app which connects to an online service. I use it all the time, works really well!
You do have to open the app to download the GPX to the device, but that works quite well. No need for a USB cable anymore.

I find it very strange that Garmin didn't implement such a thing, but this works easily enough.
  • Why can't I just download a course from Strava? The new Wahoo ELEMNT can do it and can do it from wifi. When is this feature coming to the Gamin 820?

  • It's pathetic that the Garmin 820 can't do this. I've tried many of the suggestions above but to no avail. I wish I'd never bought this device - it's rubbish. All i want to do is download a course. How hard can that be?
  • You need to copy the .gpx file in the Garmin > Garmin > New Files folder on the device.

The key item in the request was "via wifi", copying files from a computer over USB doesn't really cut it any more. Garmin must be fixing this for their upcoming devices where we should see some big changes to route creation or they'll get laughed out of it. Assuming they do then hopefully they'll retrofit to the 820/1000 too.
