WiFi won't connect. Suggestions?

Any tricks or tips? I've tried everything I know.

Using correct password. Router (Linksys 3200) is set to WPA2/WPA mixed mode. I've tried to change that and connect with no luck.
I don't have MAC address filtering or anything else weird setup on the router.
Have tried to enter the WiFi data both through the Garmin Connect on my desktop and directly into the 820
Tried every combination of security protocol and nothing works.
The 820 immediately finds my home network, but will not connect after entering the password. (Again, I'm certain that I am entering the correct PW.)
Out of ideas.

Just tried the Wifi post firmware 3 update.
The Wifi icon only showed that it was connected whilst the Edge was trying to upload the ride.

This is kind of what I was asking about previously, isn't it?

Have you checked to see if the device connects only when it needs wi-fi and disconnects from it when it doesn't to save battery? Have you tried syncing to see if it connects then?
  • Yes that was and sounds reasonable however it didn't work at all.
Since the update and adding the network via Garmin Express its working fine.

Many of us had that problem. You have unpair and remove device from Garmin Connect app, and then re-pair again. That's for BT, I don't have a solution for Wi-FI.
  • Same problem -- Idiotic Support

Same problem, Wifi will not connect to 3 different routers (2 at home, 1 at work). Support mucks around with asking me to send configurations, etc. Don't call me after a week, I call them, and they say, ok, send in device. I am pretty certain that the device is A-ok, and getting a new one not going to fix it, but I play along. Better not send me a refurb (do they have them at this point?) since I will be *very* upset. (note my blood pressure is high at this point, since (1) the Edge 820 has been a massive disappointment, (2) support is useless, (3) I don't think they care).

Since all three routers use pretty strong encryption, I assume that the type of encryption is the culprit. WiFi encryption comes in many different flavors and who knows what Garmin supports or not. They certainly don't say anything anywhere.

Having the same issue. EDGE 820 with software version 3.10. Tried on my Router with full length Alpha/Numeric password (no special characters), a Windows 10 Mobile hotspot with an 8 number numeric password, a Galaxy S5 hotspot with a short alpha/numeric password and also my work Wi-Fi a 13 letter numeric password and connected when adding and all failed to connect or do anything more after that. All except for the work network are WPA2 which is WEP. I have tried all of these networks except from my home one with an EDGE 1000 and it works perfectly.

As such, I have tried an a large variety of networks all with the same outcome - F for fail. Hope Garmin can fix this soon.
  • My WiFi is working now. I'm not sure if this is related, but I went into the WiFi network I had added and re-entered the password and it started working. I am positive I had entered the password correctly on the prior attempts of which there were at least 10 prior attempts.
  • Wi-Fi working now

Garmin Express for Mac version: 4.1.26.0
    Edge 820 firmware version: 3.10

Received a replacement 820 today. The original 820 that I bought has a problem where it won't see any Wi-Fi network and it won't connect to any manually added network. If your 820 is not seeing any Wi-Fi network, contact Garmin support for an exchange.

The first time you configure a Wi-Fi network, it must be done using the Garmin Express app because you are required to sign in with your Garmin Connect account. If you add a Wi-Fi network using Garmin Express, for whatever reason, the 820 won't connect to that network. I think it may be because Garmin Express is not storing the password correctly on the 820. I added a network using Garmin Express and after restarting the 820, the Wi-Fi network showed up but after saving a ride, it won't upload the ride to Garmin Connect. I could see the attempt to connect to the network but nothing happened after that. After changing the Wi-Fi network password manually on the 820, the Wi-Fi upload started working!

The 820 Wi-Fi adapter is picky though. I have a really old third generation AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi router that supports 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz simultaneously. I can add the 5 GHz Wi-Fi network to the 820 but it can't seem to connect to it. I was able to validate this after changing the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network to a different name (the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz were sharing the same Wi-Fi network name originally) and was able to connect to the 2.4 GHz network without any issue.

If you are having Wi-Fi connectivity issue on the 820, try the following:

    1. If the Wi-Fi network on the 820 was added via Garmin Express, change the password of the Wi-FI network on the 820.

    2. If you router is dual-band and you are having problem connecting to the 5 GHz network, try the 2.4 GHz network instead.

If Wi-Fi on the 820 is working correctly, this is what it should look like after you save a ride.

    WiFi requirements

    From Garmin Support:

In regards to the WiFi, the network requirements for your device are as follows:

    2.4 GHz band
802.11 B or G (N and AC are not supported, nor is 802.1x)
WEP / WPA / WPA2 security (WPA-Enterprise is not supported)
Channels 1-11 for North American devices, channels 1-13 for International devices
Please verify that you meet the above requirements.

One of my networks complied, the other didn't. Selected the one that does comply and now it works as expected.
