complete useless device for navigation

I wrote this under Edge 820 but why not posting it here as well?

Now as my 820 USB connector went south, I finally had a reason to replace this much hated device with an Edge 530. After two rides I can say, that the new device is the same piece of *** as the old one:

  • the device doesn't know where it is after some kilometers
  • if it looses the route, it just displays "wrong route" but does not show the way back to the route
  • it is always behind, also in the beginning - showing the crossing and new direction after I passed it
  • the screen sometimes freezes and does not accept any input from any button
  • sometimes, it is beeping like crazy - one want to throw the *** piece far away

I can't believe that so many professionals have this device. And nobody complaining? Should I return the device or is this normal behavior? It seems to record the route quite well, so at least I can navigate after I'm back from riding. But is that really all this device can do well?

  • While Garmin definitely could improve aspects of their products software wise the 530 is not unusable.

  • The unit is usable, but the navigation bugs are really annoying. For me the 2 main bugs are:

    1. The "super-zoom" on some TBT navigation pop ups means when that happens you get confusing images at roundabouts and sometimes short notice.

    2. The unit ignoring the pace setting in the course, adopting who knows what (not the virtual partner pace)

If these two bugs were addressed i would be very happy indeed with the unit. Many people don't even use navigation. If i lost my unit today, though, i would be in a real dilemma about a replacement, because those bugs would put me off.

  • wow sounds impressive, even a degree.... then you are aware these developers use seperate software trains that derivate from one major source code.... how can all other garmins be great, and just 2 device poor.... and what positive contribution does it give to this forum to let us know it is all crap in your opinion?

  • Where do you get the route from. Garmin, strava etc

  • My Forerunner 945 is very accurate; I use it sometimes for navigation in new terrain and it is remarkably accurate, even in forests with lots of small crossings. There is almost never a doubt where to go. So yes, there are huge differences between Garmin devices. And one should be allowed to say, one device line is great and the other one is useless. And sure, that's the purpose of a forum. What else?

What does this say about programmers skills: The Edge wants to go into battery safe mode because the battery is getting below a threshold. It indicates that with a full screen message, which doesn't go away until the user confirms. Issues:

    • Is there an alternative? No. So... just notify and do it.
    • Due to the screen filling message, there is no navigation anymore, no parameters whatsoever.
    • In Winter, (especially for the 820 with touch screen) it means one has to stop, get rid of the gloves and confirm the message.

It's not all crap, but hopefully Garmin is reading this forum as well and finds the one or other input for improvement.

  • A cycle computer is not a sat nav like you have in a car and was never designed to be so.    If I create a route I want the unit to guide me on that route, if I deviate I want it to alert me so I can turn around and go back the 20 yards to where I left the route.   In 10 years of riding with Garmin units I've never once come across roadworks that blocks a bike.    Garmin have sold heaven knows how many Edge units and they all work this way,   The Wahoo Bolt I had for a while had zero idea of the route within the unit and zero ability to re-route unless you got your phone out.

  • battery save mode just press back and it clears the message. I think you should spend a bit of time with the manual and searching online and I think you will find the edge 530 a really good device

  • there is no back key on 820

  • First of all, the Edge will complain after 200 yards, not 20 yards. And if you finally get notified about the wrong route you have to guess for the right one (while Edge is yelling at you: wrong route, wrong route). If you finally find the right route yourself, it takes minutes(!) until the Edge confirms.

Haha, nice to hear that there are no bike blocking roadworks in UK. In my country there are often 5 or more within a 100km route.

  • Are we not discussing the 530 in the 530 forum and that certainly has a back key
