Navigation? deviate slightly "off course" takes ages to acknowledge when "course found"

Garmin 530 latest 6.2 GPS 4.5 following a course I find that it will tell me "off course" when I get about 50m or so off but when I get back on course I have to ride the course for quite a few minutes before it says "on course". I'm riding trails that I know on a course I know and going off course on purpose to test, sometimes it will tell me up the top of screen the distance back to the course but then after that counts down to zero and I am obviously on course again it doesn't let me know "on course" for ages, about 500m or more on average.

The problem with that is if I get back on course for a couple of hundred meters and then go off course again I get no second warning as it still thinks I'm off course.
My old 520 used to tell me straight away when I was back on course, within about 10 - 20m not 500m or more and a few minutes of riding. In areas where trails are difficult to see this behavior is going to intolerable.

I have tried all the different GPS options and a few of the routing options, nothing has helped so far. Currently I have Popularity Routing OFF, Routing mode Mixed Terrain, Lock to road OFF, Avoidance ALL OFF, Recalculation OFF.

  • Recalculation, does not affect acknowledge when "course found"!!!

  • After FW 7.0 looks like the "off course" message dont clear, but the device have found the course and is navigating. Must be a problem in clearing the message buffer!!!

does this mean the new firmware solved your problem from the first message?

  • Well, yes and no. Yes now the device have finds the course and continue navigating, and No the message dont clear!!!

Aha.... I’m not the only one with this annoying issue!

I bought the 530 for following pre-mapped routes/courses in Komoot with the gravelbike. I live in the Netherlands with not really closed forrest/trees. But every ride the 530 loses the course (even in a park) and with rerouting on, it does bring me back to the course. When close to starting a course, it asks if it can bring me to course. If I click ‘no’ and do this myself (sometimes it’s only 100m) I start the course with lots of troubles and the Garmin is totally lost.

When I’m on a course and during course losing the track, after I’m on track again (you can see it in the colored lines) the message of ‘off-course’ doesn’t disappear and after clicking it away, it will never find the route again. But it knows where I am so it’s not a gps problem. You can ‘see’ where you have to go but in bird perspective and I see myself on the map... really annoying

  • Is this issue solved with v. 8.0?

  • No. Not solved.

I was holding my breath, too. Super annoying.

  • Another dead issue by garmin... not solved but dead

  • Hmm, I have same settings as stated in start of thread. For me, it ALWAYS realize I'm back on route after being off route (happens often on an MTB - new fallen trees, someone decided to plow the track, etc.), and it typically acknowledges I'm back on the route within 1-200m (not 10-20m but definitely also not 500m). I've not yet experienced it not recognizing it at all. Can't say why my experience is different. I do have recalculation OFF, mostly because I don't trust that part - getting back to route quickly (in many cases there is no "official" marked route back when you're already into the woods...) nor the aspect of it creating a completely new route (which is indeed a crazy issue).
