Race against an activity

Hi,

Is it possible to race against a previously recorded activity and know at exact points, how much time I am ahead or behind?

It seems that you can only know on the overall time and distance.

Thank you.

  • Let me reproduce what you are doing. There could well be some assumption that the input data is from a real world activity or that the indoor recorded activity is missing some key data needed to play it back again.

  • Got ya! Thanks for taking the time to look at it.

  • I see what is going on. When the INDOOR profile is selected the Edge disables the GPS and elevation data channels to the activity file. This was fine before the support for following course or an activity was added.

The Edge now takes the GPS and elevation data from the course/activity file and uses that in the Edge UI and to control the smart trainer.

Currently it does write GPS data to the file, but elevation is a constant -500 meters

I have submitted an enhancement request to Garmin to allow elevation data to be written to the activity file when using the INDOOR profile with an activity or course.

I'm not sure why your indoor activities based on following a course have no GPS data.

  • I took another look at your data file 6157712293, it does have GPS data, but not until 242 seconds in to the activity.

I guess you warmed up a little before starting the course when you created this activity.

If you were playing that back it would not be able to correctly place you on the map until you had been following the activity for 242 seconds.

  • ah that sounds about right. So if I want to record an activity to race against would I be better off warming up and then stopping the activity and starting a new one at the beginning of the course I’m using and then each time I go race I the same procedure? Once the issue is fixed.

  • Yes, that would be my recommendation, but until the elevation is fixed you will need to use the course or an original activity rather an indoor activity based off of a course or activity.

  • Okay. Thanks for your help. Any idea on how long changes take to come through? Is there a targeted release cycle?

  • It looks like if you select the course/activity before starting the timer that elevation data should be correctly record in the new activity file.

I like you was starting the timer, riding for a bit and then loaded the course/activity.

I have not tried selecting the course/activity first, but I have been told that should work.

  • So I tested it with a course and an activity and provided you select to follow them before starting the timer then the correct elevation is written into your new activity file.
