Edge 530 display auto switches to a map, I don't think I like this

Hello.  I just started using an Edge 530 after many years of using an Edge 510.  On my first ride out last night, activity profile set on MOUNTAIN, I noticed that the display would automatically switch to a map screen.  Not the normal map screen, but more of a zoomed-out map screen showing the trail I was on, display seemed fixed (no zoom option) with north at the top.  Usually this only happened when I was stopped.  Sometimes it would stay on this screen and sometimes it would toggle between my Data Screen 1 and this map, and sometimes it would return to the normal Screen 1 once I started moving again.  It seems I could return to my data screen by pressing the back button.  Try as I might I could not find a setting or a description of why the display keeps switching to this map screen.  I'm not sure I like it and want that off.  Can anyone help?  Thanks.

  • This happens to me when I am riding over a segment ( Segments Enabled in the Mountain activity Profile) but when I have the Segment data screen Disabled.... starting a segment will then pop me into the navigation menu. Highly annoying.

Is this the same with you? What are your settings like for segments?

I've just yesterday installed V5.1 Software, and have on two occasions of tinkering with the 530 seen that the device automatically started and stopped an activity... or at least in the Data Fields window there was a Red Box around the window indicating a stopped activity.

Did you update yet? Perhaps V5.1 introduced some new bugs, which wouldn't be a surprise considering Garmin's reputation for software quality

  • I do have Strava segments enabled. But still just the one ride. I did a commute yesterday where I have segments disabled on that profile and didn't have the map pop up

  • OK, just to clarify, so with the settings seen in the images below, the navigation map will pop up on my Strava live segments. (the right image is the Segments data screen)

I find it annoying and bizarre that with the settings above, that a map pops up for the entirety of the segment. I don't want to navigate the segment. Garmin should include a Navigate Segment switch in the Segments Data Screen. I find the navigation for MTB trails completely useless on this device and would switch it off entirely if given the choice.

  • I'll hopefully get a ride in tonight on Mountain Bike setting and I'll try to capture pics if I see anything.  On my 510, the segment navigation map always popped up when I got on a segment.  But I don't think this is the map that was popping up that I mention in my OP here.  But I am a bit more familiar with the device now so maybe I'll have a better idea of what I'm seeing now.

  • OK, I got a screenshot of the map that the display automatically switches to any time I come to a stop. It reverts back to the previous data screen once I start moving.  I can also back out of this map when I use the back button.  I guess I can get used to this functionality, but I'd like to know what it is and if I can disable it.  Is it a Trailforks map?

  • Here is my regular map screen for comparison

  • The map is the Basemaps you have loaded. So either Garmin's or your own custom one, like from openfiets.
Trailforks map is simply an overlay of trails on your Basemap.

This pop up of yours looks like what happens on my device (with the settings I've described above) when approaching a segment. I don't know why it would pop up when you stop...

I don't have any experience using the navigation function. I've tried it a couple times, and quickly came to the conclusion it's a completely useless feature for me and the trails I ride, since the device has no idea what it's doing. Good example is telling me to make a u-turn when there clearly isn't one, or telling me to turn left or right, after I cross the point where I should've turned left or right.

I'll have to tinker and see how to replicate your problem.

My problem is still Garmin's utterly annoying implementation of Live Segments, where one can disable the Live Segment data screen to pop up on approach or start of a segment, but one cannot disable the the navigation map when approaching or starting the Segment.

    EDIT:

Throwing some ideas out there... Try disabling Forksite. Activity Profile / Mountain / Mountain Biking / ForkSight.

You can also disable Trailforks map by going Activity Profile / Mountain / Mountain Biking / Navigation / Map / Map Information

Garmins user manual for the device is decidedly bad and incomplete. ForkSight is not in the manual. Face palm

    EDIT 2:

I think I found your answer... it may be Forksight by the looks of it. Read here

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-830/171531/does-forksight-work-on-user-created-routes-or-only-on-trailforks-routes

  • Yeah, best bet to switch off Forksight at Activity Profile / Mountain / Mountain Biking / ForkSight.

What would make me even more annoyed with this feature is my 530's compass is nearly 90º off when the bike is stationary and mounted to my handle bar. It only shows north accurately when dismounted and hand held. So stopping to see which trail is where relative to where I'm going will be inherently inaccurate.
