Feature request: Option to disable Varia radar and lights in profiles

Asking for this again. It would be really nice to have the option to disable the Varia radar and lights in profile, just like the option to disable GPS in the indoor profile. I have the Varia radar/light configured for timer start, that is, it should only start when I hit the start button before each activity. In in the indoor profile, I was told lights are hardcoded to be disabled but my experience is that when I switch from an outdoor profile to the indoor profile, I still see the "Forming light network" messages. I suspect this may be what's draining the battery on my Varia radar while I'm riding on the trainer indoor.

Please add an option in all profiles to allow the Varia radar and ANT+ lights be disabled. When I am riding indoor or when I am racing, I do not need my bike computer to search for the Varia radar and ANT+ lights.

  • I second this request. I have a touring bike with dynamo lights, so I do not need to use the Garmin-controlled lights. All profiles should have the ability to specify whether the lights, radar, etc. are present. E.g. I do nor have a power meter on my touring bike.

Another request is to have messages time out. If I forget my lights, or decide not to use them, I should not have to take my gloves off to dismiss the message that the light is missing, but if I don’t, parts of my display are hidden. All messages should go away after 20–30 seconds. You could add the timed-out message to "missed messages" and add a flag indicating that there are unread messages. But don’t block my display.

  • +1 for this. This sort of thing is the very reason that profiles exist. Very disappointing.

  • +2 for this option. When I ride indoors, my radar goes off when someone walks up behind me. It's annoying. This also means the radar battery is draining this time. Please add this.

  • I can confirm the light network should automatically disconnect when the Indoor profile is applied. You can try removing then re-adding the Varia from the Edge (menu > sensors > light)  to ensure the radar is connected properly.

  • I just did this test with the latest firmware on the 530:

    1. Powered on the 530 with outdoor profile (it was the last profile selected before I powered off the 530).
    2. I have two devices in the light network (Bontrager Ion RT headlight and the Varia radar) and they are both connected to the light network.
    3. I then switched to the indoor profile.
    4. I saw the "Light is disconnected from the network" message, followed by "Radar disconnected" but the Varia radar icon was still flashing red in the top right corner.

    Is this the expected behavior?

If i power off the 530 with the indoor profile selected and then power it back on, the Varia radar icon does not appear in the top right corner.

  • I didn't see the option to remove it from menu > sensors > lights. I removed it from menu > sensors > radar). Then I paired it again. I now see the message saying lights disconnected and radar disconnected. Thank you!

Now how do I get rid of the blinking red icon in the corner.

  • I see the icon too. I pressed the start button on the Edge, hoping it would go away. Even after 10 minutes, it remained.

  • I think Garmin, via later software updates to the 530, has resolved the issue of my original post, that is, after switching to the indoor profile, the 530 no longer tries to search for light network and it disables the radar. The issue right now is just the radar icon not going away after switching to the indoor profile.

  •   another option would be to disable the sensor while in an indoor profile. This would remove the radar disconnected icon in the upper right hand corner. Re-enable the radar sensor when switching back to an outdoor profile.

  • Yes, a good suggestion, and it's what I've been doing ever since I got the Varia (over 1 year). It would be far more awesome if the blinking icon would disappear on its own. Perhaps it can be added as a firmware update.
