Understanding Strava/Garmin Live Segments (Former Wahoo User)

I am trying to understand Strava/Garmin Live Segments on the Edge compared to my old Wahoo Bolt.

This used to be my Bolt workflow:

- plan route in komoot

- load route via komoot integration/app on the Bolt

- (optional) load structured training

- decide whether I want Strava Live Segment warnings despite / in addition to structured training

- ride!

Of course I don't want to see Live Segment warnings during interval workouts, but when following e.g. a 4h endurance ride (stay in given power range), chasing a PR here and there helps to keep me entertained. Wahoo lets me select whether I want the Live Segments to trigger always / not when following a workout / never. All this is independent of following a course. Convenient and easy.

Now there is Garmin. Firstly: Is there a way to get Live Segment warnings/triggers when following a workout at all?

When not running a workout, I understand that it still is not trivial to get Strava Live Segment warnings when navigating (why?). The only successful (n=1) workflow I've had is

- plan the route in Strava (annoying, since my routes currently live in komoot)

- load the route to the Edge via the build-in Strava app

- ride!

What hasn't worked for me is:

- push a Garmin Segment to the Edge

- load a course via the komoot CIQ-app

- ride!

But that might have been me failing to correctly upload the Garmin Segment and/or telling the Edge to actually use Garmin instead of Strava Live segments (do I have to do this? If so: how?)

I've read some people claiming that planning a route on the Garmin Connect website allows for Garmin Live segments to be triggered when navigating a course - can anybody confirm this?

So as you can see I am pretty much totally and utterly confused by the limitations and interconnections between Live Segments (Strava and/or Garmin), navigating courses and following workouts on Edge devices. Heck, I don't even know whether starred Garmin segments are automatically pushed to the Edge and what happens to the segment data on the Edge if I hit new PRs. Reading the "Understanding Climb Pro" article here really helped me to understand this feature so maybe a seasoned Edge user can give me some pointers on how to actually use Live Segments.

Cheers

  • Thanks.

I tried it with segment alerts on, on an intervals training this evening on a forerunner watch. The Strava live segments alerts didn’t happen.

From the above comments I didn’t expect to get the alerts during a workout, but tried in case Garmin had updated it

I will try again tomorrow without using a workout.

    cheers

  • After all the Strava kerfuffle and the new Course Sync feature I decided to give Garmin segments a try. The idea being, that I can find/create Garmin segments that are reasonably close to existing Strava segments and as long as I beat my PBs, I will advance in Strava too.

It has been a typical Garmin experience but all in all I think this is very workable. Here is what I did:

Enabled Course Sync with komoot which is my preferred course planning platform and switched from Strava to Garmin segments in Garmin Connect. Started a ride (even a structured workout) and followed a course and: BAMM! First segment was triggered and the Edge guided me through it. Impressed I have to say: I can now use my favorite planning platform and get Live Segment guidance without paying Strava for the privilege to mine my data. I like it.

Of course the Garmin part came next: The second segment on the course did not trigger. Despite the fact that I got the notification screen about my performance on the segment it didn't "Stop" the segment, which apparently I have to do manually. In addition it is quite amusing that Garmin display's the Strava logo after finishing a Garmin segment - talk about a minimal viable product. Furthermore while courses imported from Strava via Course Sync show the embedded Strava segments in Garmin Connect (cool), courses imported from komoot or created in Garmin Connect do not show the embedded Garmin segments in Garmin Connect (boo). Creating Garmin segments is a pain because the resolution is very coarse and lots of other little quirks and bugs.

Realistically the whole Strava shitshow is huge opportunity for Garmin to draw people into their ecosystem but they either don't care or they keep fumbling things.
