Zooming out and changing to a North up at every stop

This is making me crazy!  Every time I stop my map pops up, zooms out so far it's useless and changes to a North up orientation.  You have to manually reset to zoom and then cycle through the screens to return to track up orientation.  The map should only pop up for traisight and not change the zoom or orientation.  Auto zoom is off.  Others have had this issue which was resolved with a hard reset.  Apparently it may be a corrupt profile.  I did the hard reset and setup a new mountain biking profile yesterday.  Worked perfect for about half an hour.  You could stop on the trail the map would stay put.  30 min later and it was back to zooming out and changing to north up.  Starting to really hate this thing.  Did this to me during the Merritt Crown race.  A 122km unmarked race requiring navigation.  That was super frustrating lol!

Same error here using a Garmin 830 Edge. Orientation to North and it references a random mountain bike trail miles away. Seemed to show up after activating TrailForks. Now this happens regardless of activity. I can start a Road ride, and it will work fine, then I stop, it zooms out to a 20mile wide screen and tells me I'm "On Yellow Trail" or some such single track reference. Then I start biking again and it resumes a zoomed in map, with North up.

  • Same here. I have turned off everything possible but still this "feature" is making my life hell.

  • Same experience for me.  Two different issues that I would like to see Garmin address:

    1) the automatic switch to "Browse Map" screen whenever you stop.  Regardless of what screen you are on while riding (elevation, stats, map) the screen changes to Browse Map when you stop.  Would it really be so difficult to have this enabled/disabled?  Personally I want to just keep seeing the same screen when I stop.

    2) the unpredictable zooming.  Some folks here refer to a 20 mile zoom level.  On my 530, the zoom ALWAYS goes to the 0.8 mile level when I stop.  And not just in the Browse Map screen.  The regular Map screen also reverts to the 0.8 mile zoom level.  I have auto-zoom disabled, and I set the map to 500 foot zoom level, and ALWAYS the map subsequently reverts to the 0.8 mile zoom, sometimes in 10 seconds or so, other times it takes several minutes.  This often happens "live" with the map screen showing, and while I am moving . . . there will be a spontaneous change in zoom.  The map screen NEVER stays at the zoom level I set it at.  It ALWAYS changes back to 0.8 mile.

I can't see any change in the map zooming whether the auto-zoom is enabled or disabled.  So what exactly is that toggle even doing?  Certainly it doesn't appear to be disabling anything.

All of this is under Mountain Bike profile, with Trailforks enabled.  My use case isn't extreme:  ride a MTB with a map screen showing, including Trailforks trail layer, at a zoom level of my preference.  And stay on that screen regardless of me moving or stopping.  How in the world can Garmin screw up this most basic of use cases??

  • After some experiments on a ride today, I think I've made some progress getting to the origin of this issue.

It seems the zoom level is related to the distance to the "selected" trail.  My next challenge is determining how to find the trail that is being "followed" or "selected."  When I came to a trail intersection today, there was a prompt to select which trail (I'll call them Trail A and Trail B for simplicity here).  I selected B, and rode Trail B for an hour, and the zoom level on both the Map screen and the Browse Map screen remained at my manually-set 500 ft level for the entire hour.  However, once that trail ended, and I began riding a road back toward my car, the zoom level kept getting further out, to 800' then 0.2 mile then 0.5 mile etc.  This seemed to be the zoom level necessary to still show a section of the trail I had selected earlier.

So now the mystery is how to select/deselect trails at will.  I spent 10-15 min trailside trying to wander around menus to do this, but didn't have any luck.

The above example was done with the Mountain profile.  I also rode a section of trail using a self-created profile that I called "MTB" and in that case, although the Trailforks basemap was visible, none of the special Trailforks "features" were operating (so no bold highlighting of trail, no prompt at intersection, etc).  In this case, my manually set zoom level also remained intact thru the full ride.  Also, when stopping, this profile did not switch from current screen to Browse Map screen; whatever screen was showing just remained on the screen when stopped.

I'm marginally less irritated w/ Garmin at this point, though it is still frustrating that they do so little to make these functions understandable.

  • I have the same problem, and it's driving me crazy because navigation is the only reason why i bought 530

I do not understand who thought it was a great idea to zoom far out to show you where you are in the whole state when you're going 10 mph on a trail.

I have a new 830 and am experiencing all what you have described, this better be a software fix, or it's going back!

It's basically useless at all the MTB features it's shouting about!

  • Exact same issue - and complaints -  about both of these. Very annoying.

The auto zoom makes the 530 basically useless for mtb navigation. I can’t be the only one who upgraded from another Garmin (in my case the 520) for the purpose of mtb navigation on my handlebars, rather than always pulling out my phone to look at trailforks.

    Sad, but 100% true

When you created your custom profile, what activity did you choose to get the result you have?

This zooming out thing is driving me nuts!

Beat y’all to it. Already sent back. Worthless!  Got for MTB features none worked!

Need to be as reliable as avionics devices!!
