520 Pairing issues related to other Garmin device pair

I've spent the better part of the last 3 days struggling to get my new 520 paired properly with iPhone 6 and sensors. I've even spent literally hours on the phone with Garmin support attempting to pinpoint the issue, with their conclusion was that I had a defective device which they RMA'ed and 2 day shipped a new unit. Tonight I have confirmed with the brand new replacement Edge 520, connection problems persist. Here are the issues:

Device: Edge 520
Phone: iPhone 6 with newest iOS
App: Garmin Connect iOS (same issues with last two app builds including yesterdays build with reported "sync" fix!)

- Initial sync, meticulously following manual (and even live garmin tech support) instructions which includes turning on device, going to phone BT settings, adding BT_edge to pair, opening app, adding Edge device, going back to BT phone settings, adding BLE_edge to pair.
- adding sensors, including HRM-Run (yes, I'm aware of drop to 63 HR issue, but it still connects) and wahoo Blue cadence sensor

If I do nothing else, it will maintain relatively stable connect (although haven't been able to test this isolated setup on long ride).

-As soon as I add my Fenix 3 back to the Garmin Connect app, and re-pair (after deleting app from phone to start from scratch), the edge immediately drops phone connection. Only way to repair is to turn off 520 device and turn back on.
-once reconnecting to phone, Edge maintains connection until there is any BT communication between phone and devices. If I receive a notification, the Edge gets dropped and won't reconnect until its rebooted. Fenix stays connected and receives notification normally. If I turn on Live Track, the Edge drops and requires reboot to connect.
-every time the edge drops BT connection to phone, all connected sensors immediately drop from Edge, but stay connected to Fenix.

I was able to ride this morning with the initial Edge device, while both Fenix and Edge were connected. I did NOT use live track. Both devices maintained BT phone connection and both maintained cadence and HRM sensor connections for a 2 hour ride UNTIL I received my first phone notification, which showed up on Fenix, did not show on Edge, and immediately dropped Edge from BT and all sensor connections.

After rebooting Edge, it reconnected to BT and sensors. Then turned on Live Track, which caused Edge to Drop BT and sensors. Fenix still stayed connected.

Last interesting note, the known HRM-Run incompatibility with Edge causing HR to drop to 63 ALSO occurred on the Fenix during the ride (at different interval). This only happens on Fenix if Edge is also connected.

I think Garmin has their hands full with the new Edge and Garmin Connect iOs app. BTW, through out the trouble shooting process, I was careful to clean the slate including removal of Edge device from Garmin connect, removal of old BT connections on phone, deletion of iOs App on phone, deletion of paired phone on device, reboot of phone to clear caches.

My guess is a lot of similar problems noted in 520 (and maybe even 510) forums could be related.
  • 520 pairing issues

I too have had lots of trouble with 520 pairing. in my case I bought a new magnetless garmin cadence sensor and struggle daily to keep the thing paired. my old 500 paired instantly and stayed paired every day for 7 weeks of riding. the 520 seems quite unstable in terms of device pairing reliability. I also find the menus confusing...make sure you are actually completing the pairing operation...

not sure if i have a defective 520 or not...
