Wahoo Kickr

Had no problem pairing everything but my Kickr. I go to trainer and it won't find it. Any suggestions? Have not tried to pair it as a power meter as I want it to be considered a trainer. Not a deal killer since I use trainerroad or zwift but thought it might be neat to pair.

    Kickr or Viiiiva

What is the difference between Viiiiva and Kickr.

    I use a
    - Garmin 520
    - PolarV800
    - Stages power meter
    - Garmin bike Varia radar (very usefulls, I'm surd)
    - Iphone5

Viiiva works, but it needs patience to pair. and when i have to change the battery, all the pairing is to do again Furthermore , if i use the app Viiiiva on my iohone, i'm unable to connect to others.

What do you thing of my configuration and should it be esaier with Kickr ?
  • Ok! So I did my second ride, and this time used my Edge 520 to track the Indoor Ride. I added the KICKR into the Edge 520, and something weird happened my Power was half of what it actually was while I was riding. Should I simply remove the KICKR from the Edge or am I meant to keep it there?

Secondly, I customised my screen so I can see my Cadence and Watts, but I can't seem to get a Watt Field? It only has Watt/kg, do you know how I can get simply the Watt Output into a field on the Edge?

Finally, I am riding using the small chain ring and then a middle gear on the cassette, and just controlling resistance using the Wahoo App, does that sound right as far as setup goes?

I am not sure what you mean when you say "..power was half of what it actually was while I was riding." What two power numbers were you comparing?

As for displaying power on the 520.... you need to go into the display field settings and find Power. Within Power, you will find many power related fields available for display, e.g., 3s power, 10s power, etc.. Using the Kickr, I display 3s power on my 520.

    Kickr and TTS4

Looks like Kickr support is coming to TTS4 this or next week!

I only just realised you responded man, sorry! So so so helpful wow.

Ok, so what I did was I setup my Indoor display on my Edge 520 to display my Power and Cadence. On my bike I currently have Garmin Cadence, Speed and Power Meters, these are all connected to my Edge 520. I also added the KICKR to my Edge 520, and then did my workout. The way I did the workout was to open the Wahoo Fitness App and start a Workout, the same time as starting an Indoor ride on my Edge. This might have been wrong but it meant I could move the resistance up a few points on the KICKR to get my Cadence/Power combos right.

I was doing 4 min bursts at 90-95 Cadence / 300+- Watts. The results from the Wahoo Fitness App (which seem correct) and Garmin Connect are wildly different:

    Wahoo Fitness v5.7.7

    Activity Type: Indoor Bike Trainer
    Date: 23/05/2016, 6:00 PM
    Sensors Used:Power

    Total Distance: 26.28 km

    Duration: 1:02:01
    Active Time: 1:02:01
    Paused Time: 00:00

    Power Avg: 203.24 watts
    Power Max: 419.00 watts
    Power Cadence Avg: 0 rpm
    Power Cadence Max: 0 rpm
    Power Distance: 26.28 km
    Power Speed Avg: 25.43 km/h
    Power Speed Max: 31.06 km/h

I've then attached the Power Output from Garmin Connect, my Max power it says was 205w and I was hovering around 150w which is completely wrong... any thoughts?

I assumed this is because I added the KICKR to my Edge and I already have Power Meters attached to my Edge...

I don't connect the kickr to my 520 when recording my indoor rides. I believe you only need to connect it if you plan on using the 520 to control the kickr (follow a workout or re-ride an outdoor ride).

It's not uncommon for your Kickr and PM to have different values. Somewhere further up in this thread, I mentioned this.

You should not and do not need to pair both the Kickr and PM to your 520. If I were you, I would only pair the PM to the 520. That way your power numbers whether inside (trainer) or outside are from the same source and thus can be used for comparison.

If you're going to use the Wahoo app, use it to control the resistance and do your workout, but ignore the power number in the app. Go with the power number from your PM as displayed on your 520. If you're going to use TrainerRoad, then use the PowerMatch feature and ERG mode which lets your PM control the resistance of the Kickr. Again, your PM is the source of your power number.

Back to the difference in Kickr and PM power numbers... The Wahoo app says you avg'd 203W for the workout. From the Garmin screenshot, it looks like 73W. That's a huge difference. If I had to guess, I would say something is not right w/your PM. What type of PM are you using?

Thanks man. I am using the Garmin Power meters...

The Garmin Vectors are finicky about how they are installed. The proper amount of torque, installation angles, zero/calibration (520), crank length (520). Otherwise, your power numbers can be way off. I would go thru the installation process again and make sure everything is done according to spec. The difference between your Kickr and Vectors is too much.

I am not saying the Kickr is 100% spot on, but since you have the Vectors and those numbers were really low, I would start there.
  • Can you do this with Zwift ?

Here is what I do using a Kickr, 520, HRM, and a Power Meter

Power up your Kickr. Insert your ANT+ dongle. Open TrainerRoad (TR). Power up your 520.

In TR, I pair the following devices: Kickr, HRM, and my PowerMeter (PM). I ride primarily in ERG mode. By pairing my PM as well as the Kickr, I allow TR to control the resistance of the Kickr based on the power output of my PM. This way, my indoor and outdoor power numbers have the same meaning since they are from the same source, my PM. Otherwise, I would have Kickr (Indoor) vs PM (outdoor). You may or may not have a Kickr that lines up within 3% of your PM or you may have one that is off by 25W. You would need to do some tests to determine which is the case. By using your PM as the power source and running ERG mode, you avoid any such issues.

My 520 is paired to my HRM and PM. This remains the same whether I am indoors or outdoors. Indoors I use a different profile (Kickr) which has GPS turned off and a screen/display with fields I use for Kickr training.

If you have TR set up as described above, your 520 is entirely optional. So why do I use my 520 when on the Kickr? While TR has the ability to send to Strava, I choose to upload my data via my 520 to Connect which also sends it to Strava. Also, I tend to look at my 520 for cadence, power, and HR info since it is directly in front of me. I have TR running on my laptop to the right/left of me since I have a big fan directly in front of me. I still occasionally look at the TR screen, but mostly at the 520 for data.

Hi, Can you do the same with Zwift (instead of TR)?
And have Zwift control the Kickr in ERG mode ?

    Regards/Dany.

    Zwift - Yes and No..

Zwift has ERG mode for workouts. If doing a workout and you select ERG mode, it (Zwift) will control the KICKR.

The key difference between the Zwift and TR when it comes to ERG mode is that TR will allow another power meter (PM), i.e., the one on your bike via power match to control the KICKR. Zwift does not do this. Let me explain this clearly..

You will have to pair Zwift to the KICKR as your power source for ERG mode. Zwift will read the power directly from the KICKR and adjust resistance accordingly to meet the workout goals. If you have a PM on your bike. It is literally out of the loop.

With TR, it will allow you via power match to use the PM on your bike to control the KICKR resistance. Why is this a big deal? Well, for one your bike PM and the KICKR PM readings at a given power could differ by a lot. For example, my KICKR and P2Max differ by about 14W. Secondly, by using your bike PM to control the resistance, your inside and outside power number will have the same meaning. If you do not have a bike mounted PM, then this makes no difference.
