No memory available, Strava segments not working and no sync at all

I just got my 520. There doesn't seem to be any memory available. I'm using a Mac and select get info on the menu for the Garmin drive. It says there is only 1.9mb available out of the roughly 110mb. I tried adding a map file, then needed to delete it and that is when I ran into this issue. There is now other new files. The size of the next Garmin folder is only roughly 55mb. Because if this, I can't add the map. In addition I can't sync Strava Segments and I also can't even sync ride data wirelessly via Bluetooth to th connect mobile app. So far, none of the special features of the 520 work. I've tried disconnecting the strava/Garmin link and even reset the 520 with no luck. I'm using the newest versions of everything too. Strava segments are showing up on the Garmin connect dashboard as well but nothing is syncing. Garmin express does recognize the 520 when it is plugged in via USB and the mobile app says it syncs via Bluetooth as well...

Any ideas? Anyone else run into this. Feel like I've tried everything at this point.

Thanks!
  • If you are using a Mac then to really free up the disk space after deleting a file you need to empty the trash while the Edge is still connected to the Mac. The Mac does not really delete a file from the Edge until you empty the trash. It just renames it so that it is hidden so that you can restore it if required.

Hmmm...I thought I had done this. If I didn't, where are the hidden files now? It also doesn't make that much sense since the file was only 17mb. Plus the Garmin folder says it's only 50ish mb's...

Any other ideas? It's frustrating that basically nothing is working correctly.
  • The total storage on the Edge 520 is around 110 MB. The file system, pre-installed map and language files take up around 70 MB od space leaving approx. 40 MB of free space for activities, courses, workouts and segments.

If you have not empty the trash while the Edge is connected to the Mac then the deleted files (now hidden files) are still on the Edge.

You can free up space by deleting unwanted language files from the Garmin\Text folder.

I don't have access to a Mac, but a quick search turned up these options to show any hidden files that are on the Edge and using up space.

When you are searching, click the Action Gear and select "Show Search Criteria"
In the dropdown boxes, under Kind, select System Files, Include; and File Visibility, Visible or Invisible.
If these items do not show in the dropdown box, then first select Kind - Other and be sure to check them off.

    ls -A '/Volumes/drivename/'

with the drive's actual name between the second and third slashes. To list all items on the volume, use -AR instead of -A.
  • There is similar thread on the 510 forum from Mac users that have hit a similar problem with the way the Mac deletes files.

thanks so much! I figured out the memory issue and also the map issue...partially. The map seems to be crashing the unit. It's a .kmz file that is over the base map. Wondering if I should delete the base map...

Still not having an issue with the Strava segments. They show up on the dashboard, but won't sync, aren't in the sync queue and aren't in the segments folder on the unit. I've tried disconnecting the Strava/Garmin Connect link multiple times with no improvement...
