firmware 12.50 battery drain issues

Thought it best to make a new thread for this as the old thread wasn't very clearly titled.

old thread is here:
https://forums.garmin.com/forum/into-sports/cycling/edge-520-aa/1285167-12-5

Basically several people, including me, are seeing much higher battery drain than normal with firmware 12.50. I'm seeing as much as 30% an hour. Doing a factory reset doesn't fix it.

I've a ticket in with support in the UK - Reference ID: 10702787K0

I think it would help if other people email: [email protected] and reference that ticket number. The more people that log the issue the more likely it is to be fixed

.
• That would be a good question for others that are seeing the battery drain issue, are using any Connect IQ apps, if so which ones?

There was a recent Connect IQ update this might be related.
• I have the same problem, the battery now last for ~4h max.

I don't have any Connected IQ apps, and I've always used the same Cadence, Speed sensors and bluetooth phone.
The brightness is always at 10% and the backlight is 15sec.

Yesterday I tried to rollback to the 12.10 firmware, which I was using this summer and I've done 8h+ rides.
Today I did a ride with it, but I still see the same battery problem, a 2h ride went from 90% to 57%
• That might indicate that it is related in someway to the GPS update that went out a while back. Rolling back the unit software would not have rolled back the GPS software.

We do have at least one poster that has this issue with the GPS disabled so there maybe more than one thing causing this problem.

If you go to Settings -> System -> About -> Copyright Information

What does the GPS Version show? , I would expect it to show 3.10 as that is the latest for this unit.
• The Copyright Information shows
Software Version 12.10
GPS Version 3.10

is there a way to rollback the GPS version?
• I have uninstalled Xert What’s my FTP and also the Player app. Will check on battery usage and report back in a few days.

update:

battery dropped from 100% to 88% after walking an hour with my 520 in my hand. No sensors. Backlight at 0%. Firmware 12.50 and GPS 3.10.

seems like one of the two Xert data fields I had installed were causing the excessive +20% per hour battery drain issue.
• I think this might be helpful. I started noticing this issue in early December (firmware 12.xx).
I had two Connect IQ apps: W'bal and PowerPeaks.
I also had custom maps.
I had used this setup without issue for a very long time, but started having about 25% /hour battery usage.
Tried dowgrading to 9.1 and reinstalling the apps and maps but the issue remained. Went back to 12.50 and the same thing happened.
Decided to delete all files on the device and after a reboot reinstalled 9.1. Tried it without sensors and it seemed normal again.
Upgraded to 12.50, added my powertap, phone and sensors from other bikes and did 91 kms today with 68% remaining (3h40m +- elapsed). 8,74%/hour
Somewhere in the 12.xx firmwares there is a problem with either connect iq or custom maps.
Will try each of these soon.
Update: tried with custom maps. 6 hours on 34% battery remaining. 11%/hour - too much.
Deleted custom maps and will check again
• I'm experiencing the same battery drain as everyone else. I'm on FW. 12.5. 1hr trainer ride and battery went from 100% to 62%, I'm using the following Connect IQ Apps:

Just thought I'd add my two penneth. Since the upgrade to FW 12.5, my battery now drains 20% per hour making the 520 completely useless for longer rides. I emailed Garmin Support four days ago but haven't had so much as a reply.

The fact that so many users are suddenly experiencing problems cannot be a coincidence. Does Garmin acknowledge that there is a problem ? Do they accept that they have caused it ? Are they actively seeking a solution ? Answers to these questions will surely have an impact on the brand reputation and future sales.

As an aside, if I set off on a long ride with a fully charged battery which becomes close to discharge, and I then use a portable power pack to recharge the unit mid-ride, when I unplug the power pack will the Garmin retain details of the ride so far and will it resume recording one continuous ride ?
• We continue to investigate what is causing the battery drain issues being reported. AScott, can you confirm GPS was off during your indoor trainer ride?

Garmin needs to resolve this ASAP, the Wahoo voices in my head are getting louder, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
