Other than what CoryVDavis mentioned. If the manual upload does not work, the activity fit file is possibly corrupted. Zip and attach your activity fit file here. We may be able repair it for you.

2) I was still unable to upload the most recent rides in question. Finally went into general settings of GC on iPhone and turned off "Auto Upload Activities". Then went into 520 and hit upload of the most recent ride. Suddenly all missing rides appeared (and synced with Strava...)
I am having the same issue where my activity upload failed to go to my iphone. I erased older activities to free up space, restarted the Garmin. Disconnected from Strava. reset things and then finally turned off auto upload activities. Nothing worked :( Unfortunately I have no computer to manually upload my activity so I'm hooped if I can't get it to upload to my phone. Sucks.
Gotta play with it. Following my original post, I had difficulty uploading the next afternoon ride. I eventually achieved success again by playing with: 1) turn-off/on wifi, 2) turn-off/on phone and device, 3) turn-off/on auto upload on GC iPhone app. I'm not sure of the exact order of success during the subsequent failure. I just played with it until the ride uploaded. I have not had to delete any data. Agreed, very heavy process! Good luck!
This is very disappointing from Garmin that they did not resolve this issue. I am full Garmin equipped and like the functionality of uploading on Strava wireless and instantly, if they don’t resolve the software soon I will buy another brand.
I agree it’s definitely frustrating. If you’re able to, hook your Garmin decide directly to the computer and open the Garmin connect app. Sync it. That almost always fixes things. Be sure your Garmin memory isn’t too full with previous ride files as that will cause problems because the memory is so full the software isn’t able to function as intended. Good luck my friend.

My Egde 520 has started to cause problems with downloading files. Lately, worryingly often, even with the cable, it is not possible to upload the file, but Garmin Connect says "We do not support the file type you tried to import." I have tried to fix the file here FIT File Tools but that doesn't help anymore either.
Is the meter starting to reach the end of its life cycle?
In that case, please attach it to this thread. We can take a look to see if it is repairable.
Here is the file, original from Edge 520.
