Since 9.1 my 520 won't shut down, gets stuck on power button graphic screen

Since the arrival of the 9.1 update my garmin freaked out. By arrival I mean since I was notified that the update was available. First it froze during a ride but I was able restart and continue. When I got home and it was trying to sync there was some issue with the update notification interfering with syncing and the process kept failing. I would select "remind me" but it still wouldn't sync. Eventually I restarted the 520 and got it to sync before applying the update.

Once I applied the update I got into the weird issues. First it would verify the update, count to 100 and then do nothing. I decided to charge the unit to 100% and try later. This eventually worked. However, after the update it kept dropping my sensors which was a new problem. I have a vivo active watch and I could still detect and connect to them when the 520 was saying they couldn't be found.

Today I started my 520 for a ride and all seemed normal. However at the end of the ride, after it synced via bluetooth it wouldn't shut down. It sat for over a half hour on the darkened graphic of a power button. I don't know what to do.
