Garmin 520 Not Switching Off Properly

Hi

I have a Garmin 520 Cycle Computer.

Since the most recent firmware update I have been seeing issues with the device not switching off properly. It seems to happen mostly after charging.

When I unplug the charger, it displays a count down to switch off, giving the option to cancel or switch off. Either allowing it to time out or by switching off the device then goes dark and displays the Standby signal. If left it will keep displaying the Standby icon until the battery expires 48hrs later.

The only way to get it out of this is by pressing an holding the power button for about 10-20 seconds, it then displays a flash of white band on a black screen before starting up again.

Any offers on what is going on, firmware issue?
  • can u take a photo on "If left it will keep displaying the Standby icon"?
  • Mine does something similar.
    Sometimes when I shut it off, it doesn't fully shut off. The large "power" icon stays on the display and the screen doesn't turn off. I'll try to remember to take a picture next time it happens.
  • It seems to happen mostly after charging.

    I have observed the same issue with the device not powering off completely after charging and the only way I could find to correct it was to hold the power and lap buttons forcing a restart. That said, when charging using the AC to USB converter, should the Edge 520 be starting in normal or data storage mode? I ask because my Edge 500 powers on in data storage mode where as my 520 always powers on to the default 'Ride' view.
  • +1, It's very annoying, as I'm not used to watching it shut down, I miss it then have a flat battery the next time I ride.
    Happened just this morning after charging on an AC power supply on Saturday. 4Km into my commute, dead.
    Not Happy Jan!
  • My Edge 520 is OK in this respect.
    1. Plugged into PC -> 520 Storage Mode -> PC Eject 520 -> 520 Operating Mode -> PC Disconnect USB -> 520 Shutdown Timer -> 520 Timeout -> 520 Complete Shutdown.

    2. Plugged into AC Charger -> 520 Operating Mode -> AC Disconnect USB -> 520 Shutdown Timer -> 520 Timeout -> 520 Complete Shutdown.

    Latest firmware installed. NOTE: I used a SAMSUNG phone cable because I cannot find the Garmin one, syncs with Garmin Express OK with this cable.
  • Same problem here, its a recent thing maybe a problem on 12+ versions is causing it.
  • I have also had the same issue several times with the latest firmware. I will unplug the 520 from the charger, let it automatically shutdown, and it will appear to be off. Several hours later when I'm about to go for a ride the power symbol will be on the screen, the battery will be nearly dead, and a forced reset is needed to restart the device.
  • This has been an issue on my 520 since I purchased it 3 years ago and is very aggravating to go for a ride and discover you have no battery power remaining. Once again, no fixes or official explanation from Garmin, just a lot of frustrated users.
  • Here another user with the same problem. How it is possible that nobody from Garmin answers?
  • I have the same issue which started quite a while ago after a firmware update. Realy annoyiong and dissapointing to see no response from Garmin. May need to buy a Wahoo next instead of Garmin
