Strava Segments - why off segment?

Just got my 520 (upgrade from my 800).. I am wondering if there is any calibration allowed for segments? I was riding yesterday on a very open trail and I was notified that I was coming into a segment. Once in the segment I was notified that I was off segment and the 520 stopped showing my progress. When I got home and uploaded the ride all the segments showed up properly with my times. A couple days earlier I rode on a tight single track and segment worked perfectly. Seems some do and some don't while riding by when I upload all seem to be recorded properly. Any setup or change in settings I can do so I can see the segments while riding?
  • There is no change you can make, but one thing to be aware of is that the Edge is dependent on the quality on data that was used to create the segment you are riding against. If that was recorded with a device that was not that accurate then it does not matter how accurate the Edge is as it will be comparing against a track that is not really where it is being reported.

When Strava processes the data they may be using a more relaxed matching algorithm. Could you post a link to the Strava segment? If you also post the FIT activity file for that ride I can compare the two.
  • I'm assuming that it dropped out right at the start.

If you look a the plot below, the GPS track is in Green, the segment track is in red. You can see that you get an approaching start message, but the 2 tracks do not really line up and soon after starting you get an off course message.

thanks for the comparison... so what happens when I upload and then it picks up the segment? What is the difference?
  • The Edge is applying a less forgiving matching algorithm than Strava.

I guess it makes sense then... the tracks that the edge stayed on were single track.. and where it could not follow were a wider two track rails to trails path. Just didn't know they were that accurate!
  • I think that Edge could be more relaxed about its matching as Strava is the final judge and jury on whether you did or did not do a segment.

Accuracy is an interesting discussion as it is not so much how accurate is the Edge, but more how its accuracy compares with that of the unit that was used to create the segment. If the unit that was used to create the segment was not very accurate then it does not matter if the unit you are using is more accurate as you are then comparing the trail recorded with an accurate device to that of a not so accurate device. Their trails may not match.
