520 Map/Course - Sluggish, Very Slow to Update

i have the 520 and been relatively happy with it coming form a 500. Have loaded a local map and typically don't use a course, just ride. But have probably 20 courses loaded that have been created on RWGPS and use them once in awhile. Have noticed that when doing so my unit can be sluggish, slow to respond when I am trying to move from screen to screen.

This weekend my team had a training camp and on unfamiliar roads so loaded the courses (TCX) that someone had built in RWGPS. Another teammate has a 520 and had done same. So was curious to see if his was slow to respond like mine.
At a right turn my unit would take 45-50 seconds to update the map 90 degrees.
His would take 5 seconds.

Turn after turn that was the result.

Ideas/thoughts on what setting(s) might cause this? We both have the latest Firmware.
Thanks

Only a little testing in so far on a new 520, I've noticed it slower than the 510 on course points, about to point it at my favourite mountain trail with forest cover and see how it goes against the 25, 510, 910XT and Ambit 2R. Will post again as soon as I have the track.

Well, the 520 doesn't have a pretty track http://www.mygpsfiles.com/app/#8sHnXKv8 1 second recording like the 910XT. Perhaps more Off Course messages, the cues might have been just as close and the distance is OK. Display and Cue Sheet was nice, helpful information on sunset and time to forest edge. The 910XT would probably be my preference, almost as much information and easier to wear.

    Hi,

My 520 was really responsive in drawing maps when I got it (eg. updating the map direction one second after a turn), but later became very sluggish as described here, I think since upgrading the firmware from 6.00 to 6.20.
It's really frustrating indeed to miss turns because of this. So I downgraded it back to 6.00 (warning: downgrades lose all your settings!) and this instantly fixed the problem, it was back to normal (fast) drawing performance.

The original complaints here far pre-date the 6.20 firmware, so now I'm not so sure anymore that it is actually related to the firmware version. Maybe the downgraded revoked some setting on the device that causes this?

Has anyone taken this to Garmin Support? Is it a known issue?

It's 6.20 that's the issue. Search for the post on how to down rev back to 6.00

Rev'd back to v6.00, cues come up only a fraction of a second after the 910XT on the same course, I'll try again on v6.20.

v6.20 seems good, cues just as quick as the 910XT, with a custom map page on the display. That doesn't rule out performance degradation due to a slow memory leak though. A regular factory reset won't hurt if you can be bothered with setting up again.

Still wishing for an improved touch screen though...
  • Looks like Garmin just released a Edge 820 truly route friendly.....damn you Garmin!

I had a momentary pang of that too, thankfully it didn't last long once I saw the display size and resolution is the same as the 520, and I don't find the 520 any more readable than the 510. If I want routed navigation I use an iPhone 5S, low power consumption and a fantastic display.

    This helped me.

I struggled with the same problem and eventually a full reset does the job well!
Be aware that you lose some settings, but it now works flawless with openstreetmap routable bike map on it.

    Still on 6.20
  • factory reset not solving anything for me, and removing custommap - its still slow

My edge 520 is getting worse. The 6.20 makes it almost unusable.
The map now takes 5 sec. to update, the interval function makes the edge turn off, and the whole unit is slow to register any press on the buttons.

I tried factory reset, but its just the same. I tried remove the custom map, but on the map page it takes around 5 sec just to make the screen show (even without a map) And the refresh rate is longer than ever.

So now garmin released a new 820 the same size as the 520, wonder if they now forget everything about the 520.

It makes me sad and angry that everytime i go on vacation i have to find my trusty edge 720 from the drawer. It doesn't make any sense that the edge 520 is not powerful enough to perform this task (drawing a route)
Ohh and nobody from Garmin has even replied to this tread, so its clearly not an issue worth working on. Just keep ad useless features

The cynic in me wonders if that now the "navigational" 820 is out, garmin will conveniently leave mapping broken on the 520...
