Edge 520 and Turn by Turn directions

Forgive if this is covered elsewhere, I have been using RideWithGPS to make courses for several years. I create courses with custom cues and download them as TCX files. All of this worked fine on my ancient 500. When coming up to a turn I would get a cue like "Turn right on Elm St." On the fancy 520 I get none of the sort. Much of the time I seem to get nothing, but at best I get a "Head Northwest" or just a "Turn right", that is not really very helpful at all. Is there a way to get the custom cues to show up on the 520? I know the 520 can not do on the fly navigation, but I would have thought it could do what the 500 could do. I also see no way on the map page to show what the next turn is, again the 500 did this fine. Really disappointed if the 520 has made a big regression here.
  • Thanks. Yes I found why Strave segments were not working, the limitation that you can not do courses and Garmin segments at the same time! Kind of a big gotcha. I am happy to work thru this as I work up the maps (RideWithGPS) for a weekly club ride. Several of the folks who have newer Garmins were having problems getting the gps cues working and I couldn't understand why because it was so simple on the E500. I think I now understand! I would assume you need to turn navigation off on the likes of the 800's and 1000's too. All-in-all the E520 is a nice bicycle computer with a few rough edges.
  • You can kind of do courses and live segments at the same time: in each course options, you can choose to always display it. If you do that and don't select "ride course", you can see the course outline on the map and live segments work as intended.

    NOT Navigation

The 520 does do on the fly navigation.

The 520 does NOT do on the fly navigation. "navigation" is the ability to plan a route given a destination, and ideally to re-plan from where you are, even if you go off-route - that is the on-the-fly bit and for that you need something like the E1000. Instead one has to supply the E520 with an already drawn-out route as the original poster explained. What the 520 does have is turn-by-turn instructions as you follow that route (called Guidance in the parlance), and that is what was being asked about.
  • You're correct. I was thinking turn by turn on the fly but navigation does mean more than that.

Yes, I did find that, you can have the course displayed, but that is a very different thing from having the predefined cues showing up. And I guess to be precise, it is Strava segments that is the problem. I think I was told if you did your map on Garmin's site AND used Garmin segments it could work. But that it not how most of use are using it. I totally realize the E520 does not have real on the fly navigation (I think the limited thing they have is actually quite confusing and is what was messing me up). To be honest most of my training rides I can work around this. The big problem is more when I ride an event where I really do want the predefined cues AND Strava. Hopefully this is something they can fix in the future.
  • The "Guide Text" in maps is pretty useless to me. What I would like is the option to show the next course point in that same place at the top of maps. Now you would have something REALLY nice.

  • Plot A Route!

Played with most route building sites. Plot a Route seems to be the cleanest and as accurate as any. Exports .tcx files with custom upcoming turn distance warnings. Edge 520 will not display the name of the road/street that you're turning on until you reach the turn, but will count down until the next turn. Must paste into "New File" folder using the Garmin in "mass storage" mode.

Garmin Connect, please improve functionality. Would be nice to be able to get routes to the device without manually plugging in device.
  • I tried everything you said but I couldn't get what I want :

Launch a course and have the directions before turning (for example : turn right in 500m)... have the crosses on the map to know the directions...
Here is what I do :
I load the course from a course already done so it must not be a "file" problem... say "no" to the question "would you like to start the course" , then press start to start the training

+ I'd like to be able to have live segment when following a course (thing that I have when I don't follow a course).

It would be really helpfull if you give me the steps to do on my gps to have those things?

Few things about my actual seting :

settings --> activity profile --> select profile --> map --> Guide text is on
Training --> course --> course otpions --> everything on
Select the course that I want to follow --> settings --> course points is on

    Thanks a lot !
