Turn by Turn and Openstreetmap

I am having a strange issue, before applying open street maps to my Garmin Edge 520 turn by turn navigation appeared to be working well except however that the maps were rather sparse. However after applying open street maps they are much richer maps but turn by turn navigation has basically stopped working, I also get additional strange navigational lines I don't get with the standard base maps.

My understanding is the Garmin Edge 520 cannot process the underlying maps therefore it should make no difference what maps are used but it definitely seems to mess up the navigation. Anyone else experience this issue, I have since put the original base maps back on and turn by turn navigation is working correctly again.

I loaded my own base map with open street maps in my 520. I exported the route as a TCX file with ride-with-gps. The turn by turn works fine. Even custom cues come through (i..e. mark "mountain summit" on your map). My only issue is that the text is rather small, so reading the directions is a pain. But the turns do pop up on the map while riding (of course you're never looking at the map when they do :(
