Bug - Elapsed time stops after going into sleep mode

I have two devices:

- Edge 1050 v9.11

- Edge 1030plus v6.75

What I noticed, that if I do a group ride, record it with Edge 1050 and upload to Strava and I check the Strava Flybys, my avatar doesn't take any coffee breaks, just continues to ride, while all the others are enjoying the coffee. Which is not a well representation of what happened in reality. This was not the case with Edge 1030plus.

I did a test, setup the data screen with timer and elapsed time and started the activity on both devices:

1. When I started the activities, all timers where showing the ~same numbers

2. When I paused the activity, elapsed time continued to advance, while timer was stopped on both devices

3. I put both devices into sleep (quick press on power button) and waited ~5 minutes. At this time the elapsed time was ~0:40 on both devices.

4. When I wake up the devices, and checked the timer, Edge 1030plus was showing 6:20, while Edge 1050 was showing 1:15.

It looks to me, that some short period after going into sleep Edge 1050 stops counting the elapsed time. Can we get this fixed? It prevents group activities to be merged together in Strava and also misrepresents time spent on segments.

  • I have a ticket open with Garmin on this.

  • Sorry I’m only seeing this now. Yes I typically put the device to sleep when I get to the cafe stop. So for about 40 mins or so. I put it into sleep mode as it also then switches off my connected ant+ lights at the cafe stop.
I’ll try just letting it auto-pause next time and check if I am still shown in Strava as riding with my group.

  • So I went on the club ride yesterday and just stopped and started the timer, instead of putting into sleep mode. All the people I rode with showed up in Strava as grouped together.

  • So it looks like version 10.19, which I got 2 days ago fixed this issue

  • It has not. Was on a group ride today with 17 others. Put the device into sleep mode whilst in the cafe. Resumed ride as normal but on completion no other riders in my group showed up in Strava as having been in my group.

  • I’m seeing exactly the same issue on my Edge 840 with the latest firmware 24.19. Do you have a ticket reference? Is there any update from Garmin. Have you found any workaround?

  • I’m seeing exactly the same issue with my Edge 840 using firmware 24.19.

Has anyone confirmed that just pausing and resuming a ride without putting the unit to sleep is a workaround?

Anyone know if Garmin are planning to fix?

  • There are multiple reports on the forums (both Edge 1040 and 1050) that not letting the unit sleep is a workaround for this issue.

And there are also reports of Garmin being aware of it, so my guess (hope) is that a fix for this issue will be included in the next beta cycle. And it helps when more people report this issue so don't hesitate to contact Garmin support so that you can be added to the ticket.

  • I could just keep it paused but I put it to sleep as I have a Varia connected and when I bring the 1050 into the cafe the alert tones keep beeping as the bike is outside. I also have 2 Bontrager lights connected so putting the unit to sleep also turns off all my lights which obviously saves the battery in them. They all connect automatically again as soon as I wake the 1050 after the cafe stop. The 1040 and 1030+ prior to this both behaved as expected in this situation.

  • Turning the unit off instead of letting it sleep should also work. It’s a firmware bug, the 1040 also suffers from this issue with the latest officially released update.
