25.24 map refresh slow/freeze during navigation

Yesterday was my first ride with the 25.24 update on my 1040 device.  I also updated to the latest map (Europe) directly on the device via the map manager.
I had a (mountainbike) course of 50km loaded with turn by turn navigation off, I just follow the course on the map.
The alerts were enabled as well.

From time to time, the refresh of the map was really slow

  • The new part of the map on top was not drawn, a grey area became visible, up into the middel of the screen.  At that moment the missing part was drawn again.
  • During that "freeze", when taking a turn, the map was not rotating.  Once OK again, my followed route was drawn between my position when the freeze started and my position when the freeze ended.  Here is is screenshot:

Swiping between the different pages was sometimes slow as well.  Two or three seconds until the next page was loaded.

Any idea on what could be wrong?  I never had such issues with the previous version.
This is very annoying.  I'm a mountainbiker, the routes have a lot of turns, but during that issue I'm no longer able to see in which direction to go.

Thanks for the support,
Herder Ben

  • I have noticed the same problem with 25.24. First on the indoor trainer I noticed that swiping to a different profile before starting the activity. Also see: https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1040-series/397332/version-25-24-changing-profiles-on-home-screen-is-very-sluggish-takes-3-seconds On the indoor trainer I do not need to switch data pages. Therefore I did not notice what you mentioned indoors.

I was now outdoors. There I usually switch pages. There I noticed this as well: “Swiping between the different pages was sometimes slow as well.  Two or three seconds until the next page was loaded”. It was mainly slow  when I did not switch data pages recently. I am usually on the map screen. When I was on the map screen for a while (lets say five minutes) and then I try switching to the next data screen it is very sluggish and freezes for ~3 seconds. Subsequent switches are reasonably fast again. Toggling through all of them is okay. Even when switching quickly back to map and then one data page more the responsiveness is okay again. But when I do switch again 5 minutes later it is again very sluggish…

(I also have no e-bike, I have never paired the Edge 1040 with an ebike either…)

  • Same issues with 25.25.

The freeze does not only happen during navigating.  When I hit the power button, sometimes it takes seconds before the device is off.  Or when I save my activity, it takes seconds before the finish screen is displayed.

Just loading my course of yesterday makes the device unresponsive.  The spinner stops spinning for 8 seconds.

  • Same here. First time I'm seeing freezes on the 1040, and I've had it for over 2 years. The freezes happen seemingly randomly, when I switch to the map screen, or when I hit the lap button, or when I stop a ride and try to save it. The device eventually comes to its senses 5-10 seconds later, but it's annoying to say the least. Not sure when this all started, probably after the upgrade to v24.55, but it has continued in v25.24.

  • You are right HerderBen, the freeze does not only happen during navigating...

  • I performed a full reset of the device this weekend (delete data and reset settings), removed the maps from the device (via the map manager on the device; before the reset), re-installed the maps via Garmin connect application (mac) and synced my profiles/settings again via the Garmin connect app (phone).  I lost my history, uploaded courses and IQ data fields, but that is not really a problem.  Courses/IQ data fields can easily be uploaded again.

I have not performed an outside ride with a course yet, but the device feels reborn again: everything is so much faster; no more freezes ... just like a new device out of the box.

One of these days I will perform an outside ride and share the experience.

  • Interesting... Thank you HerderBen for reporting your findings. I will think about this and maybe try as well.
Did you already pair it again with all the sensors? Not that the amount of paired sensors is what makes it freeze...

  • All my sensors where automatically synced.  I already connected again with the kickr and the heartrate.  Cadence and speed will be for the outdoor ride ...

  • Inspired by your success of a factory reset I did the same.
So far so good. Like you, I did remove all maps, did a factory reset, deleted the device in my connect app and my iPhones bluetooth setting. I did set up it from scratch. During setup I did transfer my sensors from my connect profile. but my activity profiles i did not transfer (although the connect app did offer me that). Then I did install the maps of europe again using the windows desktop software garmin express. Now the device is fast and snappy again.

I did not yet install my connect iq apps. As there is a small chance, that these were the culprits. I will install one after the other in between rides just to be able to isolate if it is one of them.

Thanks Ben for sharing your success...
