Garmin 1040 Solar drains powerBank and does not charge

I just completed a 1950 Km self supported ultra race.  The race is not stop and the *** continues until you have your time card in at the end of the distance. My plan was to use 28,000 mah power banks (i carried 3)  to charge, my Garmin, phone and electronic shifting.  All devices had been tested on multiple rides before.

The problem.;

Everything was fine and charging according to plan, then on day 4 i plugged my Garmin into my second battery (first one was empty by now) after a could of hour i checked, 50% charge ?  Thinking i must be the wrong battery pack i quickly changed the pack, definaly full, and carried on. an hour later later , no still no charge and an empty power bank!    Now i have a problem 3 dead power bank and only 40 % on the 1040 and  700km to go

I managed to go into a town and eventually find and purchase 2 pre loaded power bank. expensive be better than wasting more time getting one charged.   one to charge my phone and one for the Garmin. I switched the Garmin of an on again to reset it.  this time it charged to 87% before flattening that battery.   Again I have to go into a town find some where i could  charge my electronic shifting which should have happened whilst i slept - new packs have no USB-A -  more time wasted  - now 9 hours behind!  With everything on battery save mode i got to the end but lost estimated 15 places

Any ideas what could have happened ? And how to never have it happen again?

Julian

  • Just attempting a ride of that length under ideal conditions is an extreme activity without the additional issues and finishing is ultra extreme. It is not a carefully controlled laboratory experiment and I don’t think you can get to the bottom of what happened, better to review all elements and plan for future ultra achievements.

    Benchmark what you can expect from various elements, Garmin, battery, phone. Minimise what you can given the usage you deem essential, review alternate options, in my experience the Garmin battery save settings are not the minimum possible especially regarding backlight. As Jan says review any CIQ fields/apps as many are developed by enthusiastic but inexperienced developers and the code might not be optimum re battery use.

    But, we should be learning from you as you have gone past what 99% of users have.

    ps there are a few posts early in the 1040 forum from riders doing various trans continental rides, 4000kms+ , none of them report charging (non-charging) issues like you had.

  • i was not holding it,

    No, enough other things to think about. If I do hold the 1040 it soon shows a temperature over 30C, if you review your activity records for the ride it will show temperature, if this is not elevated I think you can eliminate the garmin as a cause. I recall some previous posts regarding charging issues with higher capacity (wattage) chargers, the Garmin might not connect well with these, might only work with bog standard 5V USB charging.. I would note PeterK's suggestion regarding the voltage/ampage of the chargers.

    ps another to worry about, not proven although the last post says they have disconnected DI2 & Garmin and not had the issues for "3 months"?

  • Hello Julian,

    I had a problem displaying the % of the battery of the 1040, when I charged the 1040, the % did not increase, I had to restart the 1040 to find that it was finally at 100%, maybe -maybe you encountered this anomaly?
