Can anyone report if Garmin have fixed the issue that the 1030+ has with ridiculously long responses to changes in gradient?
Can anyone report if Garmin have fixed the issue that the 1030+ has with ridiculously long responses to changes in gradient?
Thank you for sharing your concerns about the undesirable lag in road grade. We want to share that we have a plan for an improved solution with consideration of both accuracy and responsiveness. Our engineers…
@Garmin-Mathew.
If you really believe that 10-15 seconds delay is considered “normal” - as the official statement from Garmin is trying to force-feed customers, then what does that say about my Edge 1000…
I currently have a wahoo element (full size) a karoo2 and now a 1040 solar. as of the 12.14 release the 1040 solar still has a ridiculous lag as compared to the other two. I really don't care too much…
Nobody said I never cycle to new place, I even mentioned it being useful when discovering new places?
The thing is current grade will never be 100% accurate whether it's responsive or not, because cyclist motion also slightly affect the %.
What I don't really get is ok they have a nice function called climbpro, but why they don't provide additional datas like average gradient per x distance and max gradient of x climb? Knowing your current grade is cool, but wouldn't you want to know the average grade of say a steeper portion of an irregular climb?
What I would also like to see is that Garmin predict average gradient of upcoming x meter length climb, so it would sort of act like climb pro but instead it gives us average % of next 300 meters and average % of previous 300 meters, max gradient of the climb.
Also, I trust that since they improved climb pro on 17.09 which is activating when detecting nearby climbs, we get 2 different grade datas, one of which is alot more responsive however it's highly innacurate, the other data is just the current grade.

The grade value on the profile is the current grade value. The grade value that you have drawn a box around is the average left to reach the top of the climb.
I thought so, however it was quite jumpy it would display 20% then go back to 4% so I had a doubt
I contacted product support, referencing the concerns expressed on this thread. I was directed to their 'Ideas' form, which I've also filled out. For those who haven't already, maybe others who are concerned about this issue can do the same so we can keep bringing attention to it. This thread is one of, if not, the most viewed thread on the Edge 1040 portion of this forum, so there may be enough of a critical mass to get Garmin to put some focus on it.
good idea, OR we can do nothing since the official statement from Garmin wrote on their web site that a delay of up to 20 seconds on their gradient data field is normal for the 1040. I think we know where they stand on this dead-end topic.
Exactly! "Our customers don't matter. We don't care"
Totally agree with the frustration. However, non-action only guarantees non-development. I work with a large software vendor who uses their "Ideas" space to drive development--the ones that get the most support from clients get development resources, the ones that don't go to the black hole.
I've filled it in (again) and referred them to this thread.
What amazes me is the the likes of DCRainmaker, GPLama and other YouTubers have not gripped this as an on-going issue
It's the biggest forum thread for the 1040 and yet seemingly ignored by Garmin
I suspect they've screwed the hardware up and won't admit it
I'd be happy with any workaround or slightly less accurate solution from them at this point
As it is for me both Gradient and ClimbPro are pretty useless (I know they're separate things). I went up Sa Calobra and Cap Forementor last week and my 1040 solar did not finish the segments anywhere near. Sa Calobra I had to go about 500m downhill at the end to get it to complete
I love the device overall, but this spoils it for me because I use these features all the time
I've tried other widgets (suggested on this thread), all of them just use Garmin's calculation for gradient, so no better. (Although I do love the winfield one, well worth paying for because of the other features)
Sad that Garmin can't give us some sort of workaround
I solved the gradient problem.
i bought a wahoo roam 2. works spot on!
i know this is not solving the problem..and i actually bought it due to a crazy bigger 6 week problem on 1040 that garmin said can't help with.
i just wanted to let you know the 1040 is a superior device in manh ways (not all) when all the features work as you need them but for me the gradient and a much unsolved bigger issue did not. sad to prob sell 1040 solar but gotta spend my time riding not fixing.
