Garmin 1030 slow startup

Hi guys

I have a problem after last update my 1030 with start up. It takes over 4 min.

Software version 13.40.

Have anybody some solution for that please?

Thank you.

  • Just a tough,

I would downgrade to a previous FW version... if you have access...

I would try to reinstall the maps on your Garmin...

  • It does sound like there is a problem with a file on your device. When you do a firmware update the edge re-catalogs the files on the device. It might be worth doing what @cactus is saying & try reinstalling the maps from Garmin Express. It can't hurt

  • I have tried to downgrade to lower version 13.29 beta, but the problem was still there. I do not have previous version 13.30 what was there before. I didn't try to reinstall maps. I'll try and will see. I'll post here how it went at the end of the week. Thanx guys for the moment.

  • O meu 1030 leva em torno de 1 minuto para carregar! Percebi que sempre fica varios arquivos com caracteres com letras estranhas e com extensão FIT !

  • What can happen if you do a lot of map updates is that the file system gets fragmented and that impacts the startup time as it process the map files.

I don't know what Garmin suggests, but I've used the windows disk defrag tool on the Edge and that has fixed the issue for me.

This is not a Garmin recommendation so do so at your own risk, but it worked well for me.

  • Aweatherall thanx. I'll try.

  • Valeu, vou fazer aqui!

  • I didn't think you could defrag a solid state drives or flash memory & It was actually detrimental to the disk.

It's not possible using the Defrag & Optimization tools in Windows 10 on my computer

I thought the only way to sort of align large files on this type of drive was to copy the files from the solid state drive & copy them back again

If it were to do it with a conventional SD card I would potentially format the drive between the copying from & back to the card DO NOT do that with your Edge

  • Ok so I do not have any SD card in my Edge. So If I understand, I can try to to copy all files from edge to my PC and than just copy back or should I delete edge first?

  • The inbuilt storage inside your edge is a solid state drive akin to a flash drive. That's why it mounts like a flash drive/SD card when you plug it into your computer.

I've copied 3rd party map files from my edge to a pc, deleted them from the edge then copied them back to the edge from the PC, but I've never done it with the Garmin maps though the principles are the same.

The process of reinstalling the maps form Garmin Express should be sufficient to realign the Garmin map files in a semi-safe way.

if you're going to do it manually just be very, very careful what you are deleting & where you are deleting the files from as it's easy to get confused whether you are deleting files from the edge or the pc & end up with nothing to copy back to your edge

To make doubly sure that I had a backup in case I made a mistake I would copy everything from the edge to my PC & then put those files in a zipped folder before I did anything else. The zipped folder would act as my backup & I wouldn't touch that.

The files that I'd copied from the edge, that I'd created the zipped folder from, would then be used as the working files to replace whatever I deleted from the edge

A word of caution, some files on the edge are named very similarly with different file extensions. If you are in any doubt following what I've said here, I would say don't do anything as it is possible to break your edge if the file system gets screwed up.
