Navigating to a Specific Course Point

I have a Garmin 1030 running12.20.

I have created a course with a course point labelled as lunch using MapMyRide.

I have exported the course to desktop as a gpx file and a FIT file.

The question is which should I upload to the 1030 to enable me to see distance and/or time remaining to reach lunch whilst navigating the course?

I assume that the FIT will have to be dropped directly into the NEW FILES directory on the 1030 rather than using Garmin Connect.

No previous posted question quite answers this one!

Many thanks in advance.

  • In the absence of an answer from the forum I have been experimenting.

    In order to get the OP to work I have done the following:

    Added a Waypoint labelled as lunch where it is needed.

    Saved and exported to Mac desktop as a TCX file

    Loaded TCX file to Garmin VIA the cable into NEW FILES directory.

    When navigating I now get the distance to next course point field showing the distance to MY waypoint.

    This is a long-winded way of going about things it would be much easier if Garmin Connect could send a TCX file via bluetooth.

  • I haven't sent waypoints to the Edge in awhile but I think it can be done through Garmin Connect and Connect mobile. All file types need to be placed in the new file folder. They will then be converted to Fit files.

  • Normally I don't bother with a cable I just send direct from GC to the 1030. However, you can't send a TCX this way AND the ONLY way I have found to be able to navigate to a SPECIFIC point on a LOADED route is to use a TCX file.

  • Course points are things in FIT or TCX files. They don't exist at-all in GPX files.

    For navigation, FIT and TCX are equivalent. FIT is small (so, it's a bit faster to copy).

  • AND the ONLY way I have found to be able to navigate to a SPECIFIC point on a LOADED route is to use a TCX file.

    How do you do that? It doesn't seem you can pick the course point from the course point page to navigate to.

    The unit converts TCX and GPX to FIT. So, you are dealing with a FIT file regardless.

    ===================

    Note that Garmin Connect may include different data in the file it exports. They have changed what they do. At one time, the file (FIT?) didn't include course points (the turn instructions) if your unit supported Turn Guidance (the big white arrows).

    Garmin might change what they add depending on whether you are exporting to a file or "directly" to the unit.

    Any such difference has nothing to do with the format: it's due to what Garmin chooses to include.

    RidewithGPS includes the same course points in their FIT and TCX files.

    ===================

    Note

    For directly-downloaded files (files that are not copied to \Garmin\NewFiles), it looks like the course points do not work until the device is turned-off and back on again. (I am doing this on a 1030+).

  • I used Plotaroute.

    When I loaded the course it showed that the distance to next was 19 miles, which was the distance to the waypoint that I had set.

  • So, you are picking a course point and having the unit calculate a route to it.

    Plotaroute is just adding course points (like ridewithgps does).

  • No

    "I made a waypoint labelled lunch exported it as a tcx via a cable to New Files and the "distance to next field AT THE BEGINNING AND DURING THE RIDE  showed 19 miles and decreased until I reached that waypoint.

  • If you create your route with the Garmin Connect course creator, you can add course points in that interface. When you transfer that course, wirelessly using the mobile app, the course point is embedded and will show in the data fields. It is very simple and no need to ever use USB nor create files. If the ride is already in RWGPS then export it, import in Connect, add the course points there, and transfer to the Edge.

  • The problem is that it DOESN"T show a specific labelled point when sent as a gpx. It shows ALL points meaning that distance to next is often meaningless.

    What the OP required was to to add a WAYPOINT labelled to a file to be navigated that would show the distance to go to THAT waypoint using a data field. The only way I have found to do that is as I have posted.
