WIFI AND 802.11n

Does anyone know why 1030 does not support WIFI using 802.11n? This was posted on a previous post. The Edge 1030 cannot connect to 5 GHz access points, only 2.4 GHz, and only supports 802.11a, 802.11b/g, but not 802.11n. Is there a work around to allow access?

  • I would assume it's because the unit doesn't have the hardware to support 5ghz.

I'm guessing that 2.4ghz hardware is cheaper than 5ghz hardware.

  • It simply lacks the hardware to do so. But why on earth should it have a 5GHz Module? The Edge doesn't need that amount of bandwidth that 5GHz offers. Besides that, the sync to Garmin isn't that much data, this can be handled with 2.4GHz quite well.

It also lacks a faster CPU to even handle the faster data processing.

A faster USB Port would speed up map updates a lot, never missed a faster WiFi module.

  • There are no many 5GHz modules (for IoT and M2M) on the market. For the limited transfer rates it is not needed, but it would be good especially due congestioned 2.4 GHz in apartment buildings.
