Garmin Edge 1030 battery drained after I fully charged it and while the device was shutdown

For the second time in the last couple of weeks, when I went load a course the night before a ride, my Garmin Edge 1030 was completely drained.  I never had this problem before and I have been using the Garmin Edge 1030 for 2 years now.   The device was recently replaced due to a mounting problem with the other 1030.  I am very careful to shutdown the unit when I am finished using it.   Also after I charge the unit, once fully charged it automatically shuts down.  Maybe that is not happening and it is just in sleep mode?  Anyone else have this problem.

When the device is shutdown,  is there anyway to check if it is just in sleep mode without using the power button?

  • Something to keep in mind is that with modern computers (the last 20 years worth), is there is no such thing as a proper OFF anymore.  It's always some sort of standby, but it's varying levels of standby.  "Power Off" is not fully off, but it DOES goes through POST.   Standby mode is normal standby and comes back up where you left it.

For me, I've been another 2 months of success staying in standby.  I think my previous 0% was the result of being tired and accidentally powered off.

  • Good to hear you've had success with the standby workaround. Anyone figured out yet if this is a software or hardware related problem? I am running the latest 11.19 Beta firmware now but it brought no improvement, if all it made the those drains occur more frequently.

  • I've been powering off with good success for several months now. Battery is maintaining fairly good charge for next rides. Rode 60 km the other day with minimal drain and powered off after ride.  Checked again next day by powering on, and charge was still quite high.

  • Yeah, it sips power for me on the road, so no complaints there for me either. Based on the reports of some people powering off and NOT having a problem when a lot of us end up with a flat battery when powering off, I'm increasingly certain there has to be an issue with hardware revision involved given the hit and miss of it.

  • I found a curious thing today when my Garmin battery went flat overnight (first time this has happened).

I normally always switch it off when I get home after making sure a sync is successful. But I forgot...

However...  here is the sequence that led me finding out the battery had drained to %0 .

First (and most importantly) I have always set Connect_Features/WiFi/Disabled. I have in the past connected to my home WiFi so the Garmin has 'learnt' my SSid/password. But as I normally Sync via my Phone (Garmin Connect) the WiFi connected feature is always disabled.

When I arrived home from my ride yesterday I observed a Sync process via the phone but then got distracted and left the Garmin still mounted on the bike. I normally collect lights, garmin, and other battery bits and line them up on a shelf for selection on the next ride. I charge any that require it and switch the Garmin Off etc etc.

The next day, (BY PURE CHANCE while doing some home automation maintenance) I was reading a log that said:

Garmin has connected to xxxxxx with SSID "yyyyyy" on channel 11.  at 16:52.

This was when I arrived home from my ride ????   Curious, I thought I disabled WIFI connect?

I then did a filter on 'GARMIN' in the last 30 days and found ONLY one other message just an hour ago!!!

Garmin disconnected from "xxxxxx" (18h 53m connected, 2.02 MB,...)

At this point I remembered I had forgotten to power off my 1030.

Walked out to my garage knowing full well that after almost 19 hours connected to WIFI the device would have drained.... Yep.

So I plugged it into the charger and checked Connect_Features/WiFi/ and it was DISABLED.  ????

So I have absolutely no idea why it decided to connect to my WiFi and discharge overnight when the setting was DISABLED.

Anyone else use WiFi and confirm this experience ?

  • I had something strange yesterday, I put it on the charger, I sow that battery was at 50% remove it from charger, next day when I want to start the ride , battery it was %0

I have an idea that this issue can came from Charger/Cable , but not 100% sure

  • Hi All,

I also have an Edge 1030 and have experienced this battery drain issue twice.  Once six months ago when the 1030 died in-ride due to the battery being at 0%, and then again today.  The first time it happened I didn't look at the battery percentage when I powered it on.  Today however, I did and it was at 37% when I turned it on.  My last ride was three days ago.  As other posters have said, I always fully charge the 1030 after a ride and the completely power down.  For charging, I use an Anker 4 port wall charger putting out 2.4 amps as opposed to a computer USB port or a PD rapid charger.

I'm starting Ride The Rockies in three days and needed to ensure I have a reliable device to track the rides (RTR is six days of back to back riding) .  ...so I called Garmin Support for input.  They very quickly told me there is a XML file on the device named GarminDevice.xml that can get corrupted over time.  They called it somewhat of a "traffic cop" and apparently it is referenced by many components within the Edge 1030. Apparently, the battery may not be fully charged, even though it shows 100% (or close to that) when you unplug it from the charger.  Also, the correct battery percentage may not be displayed either, according to what I got out of my conversation with Support.

Support could not say 100% that this was a fix for my issue, but the fix was easy and seemed worth a try.

    Therefore, the possible fix is:

Simply plug your 1030 into your computer and open the Garmin folder on the Edge 1030.  Then find the GarminDevice.xml file and delete it (I saved a copy on my Windows desktop just to be safe).  The GarminDevice.xml will be automatically recreated during the next power-on cycle.

I would ensure your rides have all been sync'd with Garmin Connect prior to deleting this file.  In my experience, none of my activity profiles were missing after deleting the file and restarting the 1030. My ride history was still intact on the 1030 and I don't see any settings missing or altered, which is a good thing.  No idea if this will fix my issue, since it is so sporadic (happened twice, six months apart), but it seems worth a try.  Maybe someone with a more frequent occurrence will be able to confirm if deleting the GarminDevice.xml file solves the issue.

I thought I would pass this along for others to try if they are interested.  Use this approach at your own risk...or call Garmin Support to confirm it is appropriate for your specific situation.

    Keep riding!

  • Now he's played it to me 2x not to turn it on. And when I turned it off yesterday afternoon, the charge was still 50%. It didn’t turn on again this morning, even though I tried it about 10 times, and several times while cycling. I arrived at my workplace 16km / 45 minutes and put it on the charger. Now after two hours the charge is 65%. I pressed the power button for about 20 seconds and it finally works again. I love it anyway, even though I only use half of the function knowledge.
Good back to everyone, let Germin be with you! :)

  • Thank you very much for sharing! More good back winds and biking!

  • This means it had crashed when you did the shutdown. It remained in a limbo state. When it does that to me I can see a power logo on the screen and the backlight is turned off, so it is suble. Solution then is a hard reboot which is what holding power button does. When you shut down make sure the shutdown completes properly, the light power logo should show on the screen then disappear after a few seconds if the shutdown completed properly.
