Garmin Edge 1030 battery drained after I fully charged it and while the device was shutdown

For the second time in the last couple of weeks, when I went load a course the night before a ride, my Garmin Edge 1030 was completely drained.  I never had this problem before and I have been using the Garmin Edge 1030 for 2 years now.   The device was recently replaced due to a mounting problem with the other 1030.  I am very careful to shutdown the unit when I am finished using it.   Also after I charge the unit, once fully charged it automatically shuts down.  Maybe that is not happening and it is just in sleep mode?  Anyone else have this problem.

When the device is shutdown,  is there anyway to check if it is just in sleep mode without using the power button?

  • I’ve got exactly the same problem with my Edge 1030 - has only happened since the recent firmware update.  Will try the sleep mode trick from now on, thanks everyone for help.

  • update:  I _may_ have had an incident where it went to zero overnight when suspended.  I was kinda tired when I hit the button, so really not totally sure if I suspended or powered off.  With that said, that's still a 4:1 ratio of powered off vs suspend battery 0% occurrences.

  • Beats me why Garmin are incapable of getting this right, when every phone manufacturer on the planet manages to do it correctly.

  • I always totally power off the 1030 and I have never seen any battery drain. Strange that it effects some units and not others. Could this be happening in models produced during a certain time frame?

  • It definitely happens in a state where the device is completely turned off. However, I have no idea what triggers those battery drains and I am not able to reproduce them.

  • I've been testing the Power Off feature for the past several days and making sure I don't select sleep. It seems like all is working fine now and when I power off, there is no draining of the battery.  It's weird.

  • At the moment, the best thing is to keep an eye on it and report back.   It's also so random, which also makes it harder to pin down.  I'm suspecting like Cheracogoff, there is an element of different batches of 1030's having different behaviors.

  • Been on “standby” for the last fortnight - all working fine, so thanks for the advice Jeff.  Garmins great but so temperamental.  They need to bring someone senior in from Apple....

  • I am very mindful of battery usage and charging for my 1030 device as I often use it for multi day remote bike packing trips. I have found that with a little bit of observation and clear thinking it is possible to prevent the various dreaded zero battery scenarios :)

The sleep/shutdown mode is confusing and it is easy to be tricked into a false sense of (battery) security.

The number one way of making sure all is as good as can be is to do a Power Off …. Always.

To confirm a Power Off you need to hear the three beep chime (High Mid Low) and then see the Power ‘Circle’ image disappear.

Sure Sleep mode is convenient. Hit Power button, screen is active, lets go!

But a number of scenarios can exist for different people depending on your process activity AND what connected features you choose to activate on your 1030 device AND the environment it is currently operating in.

I have found a number of scenarios can trip you up easily.  For example, things I watch out for…

Is the Phone Connected Feature Enabled ? (Constantly checking / displaying notifications etc ?)

Is the WiFi Connected Feature Enabled and is it connecting/ disconnecting (poor signal)?

Is the Auto Start Timer enabled?  If initial GPS fix is poor and wildly fluctuating this will likely start an activity! Beware.

Is the 1030 INSIDE and failing to Acquire Satellite fix?  (I’ve seen this go on for some time with backlight off and appearing to be ’sleeping’… drawing battery)

Using multiple Satellite setting will draw on battery more quickly.

Connecting to sensors in the next room Di2, SRAM AXS, etc) See this often.

If device connected to computer, and you eject from file system and then pull the plug, this will reset device and it will perform normal reboot and it will go into startup processes like looking for satellites, sensors, etc …. This is a common way it can fool you into thinking ‘Yep I shut it down and all is good’ This is easy to do when you are doing many things at once and you are in a hurry.

AUTO Sleep enabled ?  Sure after 5 mins of inactivity, screen off, Bluetooth off, GPS disabled, ANT+ off…. BUT WIFI CONTINUES TO RUN WHILE THE DEVICE IS ‘ASLEEP’.

My bottom line #1 rule …. Always do the  Power Off sequence.

    Hope this helps.

  • Unluckily your advice is not helping, as this bug is only happening only in power off state. The recommendation for now seems to be using standby mode instead - which I will do from now on as I experienced another two overnight discharges within the last week.
