Battery drain issue

Hello all! In my recently rides, I noticed a large battery consumption. For example, yesterday it was like 20% per hour. I reset the device to factory settings and connect again the sensors (speed, cadence, heart rate and di2). Same situation.

The backlight is off.

Please advice how can I troubleshoot to identify the cause! From what I can remember, it is possible that this issue appear after the last update (i.e. 11.00).

Thanks in advance!

  • I've noticed the same issue since V11 that battery drain seems to be an issue - running at about 10% an hour.

Having tried some of the suggestions below, ie backlight, only using one GPS etc. I can't really see much difference in drainage.

I'm still assuming Garmin staff look at these forums and investigate problems like this? They used to comment, do they still do that?

  • I assumed the same but rather than wait and hope, I contacted Garmin using livechat. Garmin were super helpful, they ran a diagnostic of my 1030 and they agreed battery consumption was unreasonably high.

I confirmed it was within the 2yr warranty and they offered to replace it. I sent it away and within 3 days I received a new unit.

  • Is the new one better then?

  • also had do you prove the battery drain rate to them?

  • Garmin takes your 1030 serial number and runs a diagnostic at their end. They can validate the performance of your unit. I haven’t used the new 1030 as I plan to sell it as a new unit and upgrade to 1030plus.

  • I think this cold be problem with Edge battery indicator showing wrong data not with real battery depleting so fast. Today I rode 1h40min at -15'C started 72%, when I was back - 0% (and Edge was normally working). After only 2min of charging - it was 35%

  • I am definitely experiencing very bizarre battery drain issues and it correlates to the v11 update. Garmin needs to address this as I'm draining half the battery in a 2 to 2.5 hour rides. I always set the backlight to intermittent and fully power off the unit when it is not in use.

  • Same here, I’m on 50% after 2h30....., frustrating at the very least

  • I have been using my 1030 for about 2 years. Battery life has never been an issue...until recently. About a month ago I started having the following issue. Overnight after a full charge (100%) when I turned on the unit before my morning ride the battery level was approximately 6% and required hookup to an auxiliary power source to record my ride. After several times I called Garmin and they replaced with a refurbed unit.  Three weeks with the refurbed unit and the same issue has started again. t appears I am not the only one, but it seems odd that my older unit worked flawlessly for many many rides about 20 of which were 100 miles plus. Never an issue with battery life. Perhaps a soft or firmware issue with 1030's?

I would love to hear some suggestions as I don't really want another faulty refurbed unit. HELP!

  • Since I updated from about from V10.34 (or something which was that old) to V12.20 I have been experiencing that the power off not always power off but the symbol of "power off" sign remains on the screen with black background and almost it cannot be seen.

    This can drain the battery.

In this case you have to press the power on/off button for ~20 seconds that will do a hard reboot (no data was lost).
