Garmin Edge 1030 Firmware 9.50 and 9.66

It's been 3 months now I have been screwing around with TWO of these GPS models since I upgraded to 9.50.  Out of frustration; I Installed the BETA 9.66.  ALL THE SAME ISSUES OVER AND OVER AGAIN AT LEAST TWICE PER WEEK.

Loses sensors: HR, Speed/Cadence, Vector 3

Loses data screens and all settings

Loses locations

Won't boot up.

Resets on it's own then asks me what language I speak.

Locks up

Won't connect to PC unless you hold the power button for 10 seconds.

Loses phone pairing.

  • I had to send my Edge 1030 to Garmin for a replacement after the 9,66 upgrade, it was completely dead

Do not attempt to update to v9.66 it will kill your device, Garmin support confirmed that

  • 9.66 was mailed to me by Garmin support becsuse it addressed a long standing issue I raised.

When I installed it the FW killed my Edge, It took 5hrs & numerous resets to get it connecting to a computer without crashing so I could get 9.50 back on it.

I think 9.66 has been pulled as it can't be downloaded anymore from my link

  • It happen to 9.50 also , in the middle of the ride, even I have pressed several times the power button  , start button , all together , nothing happent

  • Same to me... It frezzed while saving after the tour. This was the last life sign. It won't start nor react to anything. Even hard reset is not possible.
    Firmware v9.66

  • I have downgraded to 9.34 beta(very stable until now)  from 9.50 , I was just a step to install 9.66. glad that I have read the issues here

  • how did you manage to recover it and boot?

    was your display blank?

  • It was trial & error really....

I'd previously backed up my settings before installing 9.66

I managed to power-off the edge by holding the power key for 10+ seconds.

Then forced it into mass storage by holding the lap button & plugging it into the USB.

This enabled me to copy the debugging folder from the edge to send to Garmin. I had a look at the errors, which indicated a Bluetooth issue was causing the crashes. (see bottom of post)

I copied the 9.50 f/w to the edge, but when I disconnected the edge crashed on boot before it could be installed

I then did a master reset of the edge.

    > Power device off
    > Press and hold Lap and Start/Stop
    > Power device on while still holding both buttons
    > Continue holding buttons when Garmin "splash" screen appears
    > Release buttons when Garmin "splash" screen disappears
    > The reset is successful if, once powered up, the device proceeds into the initial setup wizard.

I followed the initial setup, but didn't set up the phone connection & as soon as I could disabled BT on the edge, which made it a little more stable.

I powered the edge off, connected it to the computer & copied fw 9.50 to it. This time when disconnected I managed to install the FW.

I connected it to the computer again & restored my settings, profiles, activities, CIQ apps etc. On disconnection everything loaded back in.

I had to remove the edge from GCM & pair it again. But other than the firstbeat training metrics getting reset the edge was back to where it was.

A right ballache of a procedure.....Not a happy bunny with Garmin considering they sent the beta to me.

Looking at the 1030+ forum it seems some users are experiencing the same issues following installation of the latest beta, which has a similar changelog as 9.66

  • thanks for all the details!!!

how did you actually "understand" the device is turned off/ turned on ? :-) or maybe rather Disappointed

mine just flickers backlight when i hold the power button for longer than 10s

    did yours displayed something?

(i cant seem to get it to display anything or connect to pc)

  • mine behaved exactly the same, Garmin support is aware of the problem and asked me to return it for an exchange unit, as there is no way to fix it myself

  • where are you from?

To what address did you sent de details to garmin?
