Garmin 1030 locks up near every time I turn it on

Got a brand new Garmin 1030 a couple weeks ago at the tail end of the sale. I'm actually pretty satisified with it. It hasn't failed me during a ride.

However, most times I turn it on it acts like it's crashed for maybe a minute maybe more.

Here's a fun picture. It sat doing nothing for about a minute, then it sat with the freaking screen distorted for long enough for me to find my phone and snap a picture.

I get the impression this is how it's supposed to work and I should just live with this sort of "mostly works" Garmin approach to software.

p.s. Big surprise image upload doesn't work (for me, for now) in the garmin forums so no beautiful picture, here let me paint a picture: main garmin screen with a little half size menu stuck in an animated transition from screen to screen.

  • Honestly this is a brand new product, I find it hard to understand. I *think* maybe it just needs a new screen that says "I'm syncing some routes over wifi" so please don't touch me, I don't actually support background processes. And maybe a little fix. Basically when it's syncing (I think) it's about as useable as when it's updating firmware.
