retrieving rides from a reset device

Greetings all

I have just done a ride and I put my Garmin 1030 into my pocket so that it could bluetooth transfer the ride onto my phone which was also in the same pocket. Instead whilst in my pocket my Edge 1030 did a complete device reset erasing all past files.

Is there anyway I can retrieve my last ride? Any help would be much appreciated.

Right but since he's on a Mac, he can't use a windows program to scrape for files.

I've used Data Rescue 5 for the Mac before, by Prosoft. It isn't free though.

It just shows up as a USB storage device, so it's the same Win/Mac/Linux for getting data off manually.

On a Mac but there must be an equivalent for it. Thank you! Will let you know how it goes.

Thank you for your replies, I am now in the process of using Data Rescue 5 for Mac ("Disk Drill" also) and it has found a folder that corresponds with the start time of my ride. However the file is a tmp file and is only 107kb. Before I spend 80 bucks on this software is a tmp file something that can be converted into a legible fit. or gpx file?

Aha and now I have found a fit. file that corresponds with the end of my ride and that is a more typical 303kb. I guess I will have to pluck up courage and press "pay"

May be able to try phtorec or testdisk from cgsecurity which are free

Thank you all. In the end I wound up using Disk Drill it had the easiest interface and I could see exactly which file I wanted, it looks like this 2019-12-06-11-24-35.fit I paid my money and retrieved the file but of course it is too corrupted to be read by strava. Ugh. Am trying various fit file repair places such as Strava so far no go. Further advice would be glorious. I understand if I am being a pain but this ride was quite big and quite a long way away

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/FIT has some repair links at the bottom. First link would be more if you were a programmer and if so that or chat threads like https://www.thisisant.com/forum/viewthread/4275 may set you on a path to writing a .fit interpreter which could help give a better idea of if the file contains relevant data or not.

No one tool always recovers everything so you could expand your horizon to see if you can get different results. Continuing to use the device would continue to lead to chances of more and more corruption and since we are talking about flash memory, corruption of previously deleted data happens sooner. Please create an image of the Garmin memory if possible; if it shows as a block device you could use dd to read the device's storage as a whole to an image file then always work from that file.

Probably use the Corrupt Time Fixer
