Temperature sensor

Ok, this is probably the latest thing you worry about when using the Garmin. The temperature sensor. But mine is reading low, and it bugs me.

It basically reads about 4 degrees Celcius below what it should be. I'm not using any case to cover the Garmin.

Side note: I'm still on version 3.9. It has never failed on me and seems to be the most stable one out there yet. I haven't seen anything in the changelog temoerature related, but I might have missed it.

Anyone else expierencing the same issues?
  • In the early days of Edge 1030 most users complaint about too high temp readings - about 4 degrees too high.
With firmware 3.8 Garmin fixed that issue. Temp readings are now about 4 degrees lower than before.
For most users this is/was ok.
It seems, you‘re not the lucky one!
  • Mine also have temperature issue: for example, today outside temperature was 0 but 1030 displayed -4.5.

I think the only way to check if the temperature sensor is OK is to leave the 1030 for a while stationary out of the sun and wind and then see what the reading is. I know no sensor that displays the correct temperature moving through moist air, in and out of the sun etc. so I don't take the temperature serious while riding. It only displays the temperature correct when I leave my garage or leave my bike for a while in the shade.
  • You're right, but I think Garmin could fix it.

True, but my 800 was much closer then the 1030 I have now. I don't expect it to be bang on, but it should be somewhere close.
  • I absolutely agree!
For some users temp-readings are too high, for others too low. Most users (me) don‘t care about...
It‘s a GPS cycling computer not a weather station!
  • If you don't care it's not a problem. The point is that this is only one of some other issues of 1030's (remote and Live Track for example) and Garmin should have fixed them a long time ago.
I gave them my 600 € and I want all its feature to work as expected, temperature sensor included.
  • I have check some devices temperature from strava's friends on the last ride
520 and 1030 agrees on same avg temperature (0C )
Edge 810 had 2C avg temperature for same ride, IIremember that had good temperature sensor, but I dont care if it is not precise or not during ride, I care before ride to know how to dress :)
you can check weather from garmin or from your phone
    ????

I would make an exception for the temperature sensor (Garmin can beat some physics laws) but in general I agree with you. When they offer some feature it should work. For future devices I would like Garmin to leave out all the frivolous features. IMO the Edge 1030 has a lot of them. They make it overly complicated to wok, to operate and to set it up, all at the cost of the basic functions of a high end GPS based cycling computer with navigation capabilities. Why on earth does such a device need an app on a smart phone and a BT connection. My biggest grief is the halo issue with the display because the display and the better battery life should be the main improvements to the previous model, Edge 1000. YMMV.
  • Mine is reading low. It reads 3 degrees Celsius below. This is very annoying especially in temperatures around freezing.
