Edge 1030, Light Network and Varia RTL 510 Radar - Does not Find Radar Intermitently

Had all sorts of problems pairing the new Varia RTL 510 with my Edge 1030 ( I have updated from v5, to 5.28 and now 5.33 public betas).

When first pairing, it only found the Radar. I had to remove, restart and re-pair. This time it found the Light Network first ( this took an age at Forming Light Network) it then paired the Radar.
But subsequent power ups the Edge 1030 finds the Light Network ok but the Radar is showing as '?' and does not pair so no Radar functionality. It does not matter which order I power up, or whether from standby or not. Once or twice it did find the Radar part and all connected correctly, but most times it is just the Light Network and NO RADAR - very frustrating. If I going into sensors and try and manually connect the Radar - it just sits there trying to connect but fails.

I have now disabled the Light Network - (Set Enable to Off) for that device in sensors, and now on each power up it reliably connects to Radar. So at least I now have my Radar functionality working - but why is the Light Network so over complicated and unreliable??
  • Thanks for the info Steve. When you initially paired the RTL510 to the Edge 1030 did you make sure you had the RTL510 in pairing mode? This mode will flash a purple light when it is in this state.
  • To be honest I can't remember, so I have just tried removing light network and radar from sensors, power both off.
And yes I can see now that if not in pairing mode i.e. Blue light then only the Radar is found.

Reading manual :-) Pairing mode Purple Light is needed for Light Network

So, I have just removed the Light Network and the Radar again, and followed instructions for paring above, both Light Network and Radar are found as sensors but Radar does NOT connect.

Now, whenever I power up I get Sensor Software Update v3.30 (I click Remind Me - see other post about this failing).
The Light network forms, but Radar does NOT connect.

As explained in previous post, if I Disable the Light Network, and Power Off/On, it consistently connects to Radar.

So I can't have both the Light Network and the Radar connected at same time.
  • Just tried with the new 6.00 firmware for the Edge 1030, I did get the Radar and Light Network connected at same time once, but can't re-create the steps. I think It is something to do with power up order and whether one is in standby or not.

Basically if both in powered off state (i.e. not in standby) before starting up then I can't get Radar to connect when Light Network is enabled.
  • One more addition, I tried pairing the RTL510 with my Garmin FR935 watch, and Light Network and Radar all connect as expected.

So this points to an issue with the Edge 1030 - anybody else seen this?
  • As nobody else reporting this, I tried again, remove all sensors and repair again.

it seems to be more reliable now, two things I have done differently.

(1). I am now only use standby / smart mode on the edge 1030 and RTL510. On my previous devices edge 820 and RTL500 I used to power down completely because standby battery life was not so good. With the newer devices (RTL 510 standby is 5 months), I can now see that using standby is way to go.

    (2) Be more patient, sometimes the light network connects immediately, but the radar takes some time to establish a connection, maybe I was not waiting long enough in my previous testing.

I was seeing this error as well. The radar paired immediately. I could only pair the light network by entering the Varia ANT+ ID number in the manual pairing part of the Edge 1030.

This is almost the same situation as in my case. The difference is that my BE1030 does NOT recognize RTL 510 as a tailiight at all. It sees RTL as a RADAR only. Firmware 6.30. Reset to factory defaults doesn't help - the same situation appears. I have also E820 with firmware 10.0 and it works as expected - RTL 510 is recognized twice - as a radar and tailiight separately.

EDIT: eventually I have managed to connect RTL 510 twice. Here's the scenario, which I have applied:
    1. removed RTL 510 RADAR sensor from Edge
    2. started adding new LIGHT sensors - in this point BE1030 has found RTL 510 as a RADAR and TAILIGHT in the same process. Have not needed to research RTL as a RADAR. Now, at this moment, it seems, that everything is OK, will repeat some tests, and in case of any problem will update this thread.
  • In order to form the Garmin lights network you have to press delete on the network to reomve both sensors.
After that go to sensors and remove the radar manually from sensors too!
Then select add sensors and search all to add both the lights and radar.
In order for the sensors to be detected put them both in pairing mode.
After both sensors are detected click on "show more" and use the option "select all" to add both sensors.
Wait for the light network to form
Test both lights to check if it is functional
