Resolving Some Quirks of Garmin Turn by Turn (TBT) Navigation

Can you give me some pointers so I can understand how the 1030 is generating my TBT directions. I'm new to the 1030. Prior to this I had a wahoo bolt, and am familiar with how that works using ridewithgps.com. With the 1030, I don't understand some strange things I get using garmin turn by turn when navigating a route that I've created in strava or garmin connect.

For example, yesterday I rode a course that I had created on strava. At a couple of places where I would want to go straight and follow the road, the TBT indicated I should turn off (either to the left or the right) and get onto the sidewalk, or onto a driveway, that was roughly parallel to the road. Why is it doing this? Are there setting I can adjust to eliminate this? With the wahoo bolt I could review the cue sheet in ridewithgps.com and if there was something quirky like this I could edit it out or modify the TBT directions. With the 1030 it appears that's not possible? Hopefully its just that I'm not understanding how to use the 1030.

Also, I have noticed that when I'm using the navigation screen the upcoming turn notification doesn't pop up, like it does on the other screens. Is there a way to enable that to happen on the maps screen. It would be nice if I could get the zoomed in intersection and countdown, like what happens when I'm on the other pages.

Thanks in advance!

  • I think RouteCourse only works with GPX files so the cue sheet isn't imported. You could try the Navmin Application/Widget, which allows TCX import and once the file is on your mobile device it doesn't require an Internet connection

We (routeCourse) use FIT files, not GPX files, behind the scenes (in fact all Connect IQ route download apps have to for Edges), but hitherto we have not been passing through the cue sheet info from Ride with GPS. This is now being tested -- email "][email protected] if you have our Premium option and you'd like to try it ahead of its general release.

Thanks, everyone! I'm starting to see some hope, but I'm still working through some issues.

I switched USB cables and with that was able to get my computer to recognize the 1030 via the file explorer and also garmin express. I declined to update the maps, though, since that's going to take an hour or two.

I installed the IQ app routeCourse and it connects just fine. It allows me to import TCX and other formats, and it works wirelessly, but the test route I used last night did not display the TBT course points.

I also can drop files in to the "NewFiles" folder via USB now. I haven't tried gimporter because its android only. I'm running apple iOS.

Like I said, last night I experimented with some simple routes using all of these methods. I had no problem importing a RwGPS route into the 1030 using routeCourse but still there were no course points for the turn cues displayed. I also tried creating a route on garmin connect with several course points and those displayed appropriately on the 1030 during my ride. When I dropped the TCX file into the "NewFiles" folder it wouldn't show up as a course on the 1030. Not sure what I was doing wrong with that, but I had to call it quits for the evening and will try again today or tomorrow.

Overall, it looks like the onlyway to get a TCX file over with course points in tact--if this works at all--is by dropping it into the NewFile folder via USB; although this has not yet worked successfully for me. Bringing the file in via the import feature of the garminconnect website, or via the routeCourse app, works for the course itself but the course points showing the TBT are not available.

I'll keep fiddling with it and let you know my experience. If you have any other suggestions please keep them coming.

Hi Thanks for the clarification. Does that mean routes imported into dynamicWatch from RwGPS via linked accounts or the chrome extension are downloaded in FIT format even if the account isn't one of the Basic or Premium RwGPS accounts therefore wouldn't normally permit export as FIT?

The import from Ride with GPS is directly from their API (as JSON) not as any file format, and their free/premium limitation of FIT file export is not applicable. When I said "behind the scenes" earlier I should have clarified that that was only for the step "dynamic.watch => routeCourse/Edge", which has to be FIT.

Ahh now I get it thank you. The bit I did know was that the App to Edge had to be FIT. I just didn't know how you got the routes into dynamic.watch from the various sources. Cheers for filling the gaps
