A day in the life

Just some insights into the consumer experience with this flagship device and associated equipment. I commute to work daily and this is a fairly typical routine. Currently on FW 3.97 although if I'm honest nothing much has changed since the initial release.

Paired with the Varia UT800 "smart" head light and TL 301 "smart" tail light (about $1000 AUD worth of gear).

- Turn Garmin on. Refuses to pair with phone.
- 5 minutes of unpairing and pairing.
- Set off on ride.
- 1.3km in, 1030 shuts down due to a starred segment, which has since been unstarred but continues to plague the device.
- Power device back on.
- Light network drops out. Lights now inoperable, must be forced on in manual mode.
- Refuses to pair with phone after reboot.
- End of trip .
- Spend another 5 minutes unpairing and pairing.
- Ride repeatedly fails to upload once paired.
- Repeat all of the above on the ride home.
- Plug device in to USB to manually upload .FIT files, which are incomplete anyway due to device shutdowns.
- Check Garmin forums for any signs of improvement.

For those rare times when everything is working as intended, I absolutely love the device. But the software is so far from being good enough.

Yes, I know I should be sending feedback to the beta email address, attaching logs etc. but as you can see from the above, it feels like every time I get on the bike I'm doing work for Garmin rather than enjoying the ride. I'd roll back to stable firmware, if it was any more stable than the beta.
  • So your major issues are related to phone pairing? Which phone do you use?
I have found that with the later versions of iOS, Garmin Edge 1000 and Fenix 3, Garmin Connect.app on my iPhone X that it can sometimes take 5 minutes before it connects ok. Obvisously this is not ok, especially since it worked brilliantly a year ago but it might save you some hassle pairing/unpairing.

Major issues are, in no specific order:

    - Refusal to connect with phone, unless unpair and re-pair each time. Phone its Note 8 with Android Oreo.
    - When re-paired (every. single. time), activities refuse to upload automatically. Manual attempts to upload activities yield unhelpful "Upload failed" error messages.
    - When connect to Wi-Fi network, same issue persists - activities fail to upload. Basically only option is to manually upload .FIT files to Strava via USB.
    - Starred Strava segments have a nasty habit of causing the device to shut down (widely reported issue in this forum).
    - Despite having un-starred all segments in my Strava account, this does not appear to have synced to Garmin Connect or the 1030 itself. So, I have 0 starred segments on Strava, but the device still shuts down or shows starred segments in action.
    - Therefore need to disable segments feature entirely.
    - Light network fails and the 1030 is incapable of controlling head and tail lights, despite the device indicating they are connected and operable.

So, for this $600 device with all of its advertised features, I have:

A standalone device that refuses to connect to phone, is incapable of providing any of the advertised weather or routing functionality, is incapable of controlling the $400 of Garmin "smart" lights, is incapable of showing me current effort compared to Strava PBs/KOMs and needs to be plugged in to a PC in order to manually upload activities to Strava.
  • I'm guessing you just have a bad 1030. I also have the front and rear lights on the network and I was amazed how well they worked yesterday. I had already used this combo on my commute rides, but last night did a big hill ride with a couple of friends. The front light would blink as expected, but change to a constant light depending on the situation. With quite a few cars coming down the hill while I was going up, I felt so much safer. I could 'see' cars from the rear with the radar. When I finished the ride, it uploaded faster than I expected through my iPhone 6s. I was waiting for the upload so I could turn off my 1030 which would then turn off both lights. Only a matter of minutes and all was done.

Granted I don't have any 'features' turned on. I use Strava, but don't want to follow segments while I'm riding. This is my 2nd 1030 as the first was damaged in an accident a few months ago. Both have worked to perfection (although I do turn off the annoying hazard warnings). I have used courses and loved how well it did. I bought the 1030 mostly because of its mapping and courses which have so far met my expectations.

I have Bontrager head and taillights (3 total) on my network that start and stop automatically with starting/stopping an activity. It's not necessary to power off the Edge, just select the option "start with timer."
