Windows 10 + Edge 1030 = long time to be accessible !

Hello,

I have a strange problem with my Edge 1030 on my main PC running Windows 10 Pro 64.

When I plug the USB cable, I get instantly two "removable disk" entries in Windows Explorer E: and F: (one for the Edge USB flash drive and one for the Edge Card reader).

But It is impossible to access data through these entries: hang and timeout... Using Windows Explorer or Garmin Expresss...

I have to wait for 7-8 minutes to see E: entries getting "Garmin Edge 1030" label... Then it is possible to access data using Windows Explorer or Garmin Expresss...

On the same PC, if I connect my Edge 820, it is recognized immediately... On another PC with Windows 7 Pro, the Edge 1030 is recognized immediately...

I tried to use other USB cables: same result...

USB Garmin drivers are at last level...

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks

Doesn't do this for me. Do you have a virus scanner which is scanning the entire device before it allows you to access perhaps? If so maybe it's got an option to white list the 1030, maybe the 820 has already been white listed?
  • Good idea... But I have temporally deactivated Windows Defender... But I still get the same problem...
  • I've done a few tests for you to give you an idea of what the normal sequence is for a 1030 connecting to Windows 10 (1709 - Fall Creator's Update).

Time index 0 - Unit is OFF

10s - First chime from Windows as the unit powers on and is recognized by the USB bus
35s - USB Device Disconnect sound
40s - USB Device Conneced sound
48s - Both disks (Internal & MicroSD) become visible and available in Windows explorer

The 1030 has a different sequence than the 1000. On the 1000, when you get a USB Device Connected sound, the drives become available shortly after. On the 1030, you get a device connected, then a disconnect and then finally a device connected. A bit bizarre but it works reliably
  • In contrast to the Edge 1000, which I connected to PC in „off“-mode, I connect my Edge 1030 in „on“-mode to my PC (WIN 7). In that mode the Edge and its SD card is available more fast.
  • I have fixed my problem !

    I found this article:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3183365/garmin-usb-devices-don-t-work-with-windows-10-anniversary-update

    "
Cause: This problem occurs because Garmin devices that are formatted with FAT12, FAT16, or FAT32 file systems are not recognized as mass storage devices by a computer or device that's running Windows 10."

"Resolution: To resolve the issue, download and install the latest version of Garmin Express software, version 4.1.25. The Garmin Express tool recognizes the connected device and updates its boot code to make it compatible with Windows 10."

So, I decided to do this test:

    1) Once recognized by windows after 8 minutes, I did a reformat in FAT32 of the flash drive of my Edge 1030
    2) I unplugged the Edge 1030
    3) I did a Power Off / Power On
    4) I plugged the Edge 1030 on my PC... And it was recognized immediately !!! And the directories structure was automatically "rebuilt" during the reboot process...

My Edge is working now as a charm...

I hope it could help other Edge owners with the same problem...
