Electronic compass, really?

I have several garmin handhelds with true 3 axis compass.    It’s very helpful.   I just noticed my 1030 plus has ability to “calibrate compass”.    I assumed it was merely gps movement direction.    Very interested

I have found some very limited info on this seemingly hybrid magnetic sensor that is not present in historic edge products.

Do any of you have insight or experience?.   My stops at junctions usually require me to move slightly to get map back to proper orientation.    Hence my surprise there is a magnetic sensor.          Anyone find that it behaves magnetically and consistently ?

  • This is also a serious problem I encountered. The map rotates when I stop, and the electronic compass often stops working, which makes it impossible to "Track Up" when riding, causing the map to move laterally, but Garmin always denies that there is a problem with the device.

  • video link

The video in the link, I am moving, even if I stop moving, and then I rotate the edge 1030 plus unit, I find that the map will not rotate back to the original direction, this is evidence that the electronic compass has stopped working

  • Ahhh, it's you! We already talked a few months ago that there is something wrong with your Edge 1030 PLUS:

What is obvious from your video:
You are moving (speed 50-60) and you have chosen "track up" as map orientation, because otherwise you would not see the north arrow at the top left and also the small blue triangle of your position always points upwards.
But the movement of the map while driving is not "track up", but the map moves sideways along the loaded course.
This is not normal, and I have never seen this (except on your device)....
And I don't think the electronic compass is causing that, because - as I‘ve said - when moving the compass is not responsible for map orientation. It‘s done via GPS.

  • In fact, I have sent it for repair, but Garmin thinks it’s okay. I want to prove if it’s a special case, so I bought another one, and then sold the previous one. In the link video is the newly bought 1030 plus.

  • Is your device an APAC device? (Asia Pacific)

  • Yes
I live in Taiwan and many Garmin products are made in Taiwan

  • I agree this is bizarre.   I have never seen the “you” triangle track sideways.    I note there is a small “x” in lower corner.    It appears it is still on a search or pan screen and not the typical tracking view.  Or possibly a heading or other directional function is active.    Maybe not but I do not see this on my 1030 while moving.
Note, my compass was not working…. Only after realizing there was electronic did I calibrate.    It did fail mid ride which was very disorienting when stopped.   And would not calibrate.   However,  after a restart it quickly could be calibrated and worked since,    Hence….for me it was software that was causing compass fail.   Not related to your issue directly but background.

  • I note there is a small “x” in lower corner.

That‘s normal when a course was loaded.
    So, nothing to worry about…

  • Maybe you try the setup „North up“ for map orientation - just to check if this behaves normal.

As per definition the map should be fixed North up and the blue „You“ Triangle should rotate and align to the track.

  • I will try "North up" again next time, but I am not used to this setting
I usually use "courses" to navigate
My current settings are as shown below
