Titanium grade 2 vs grade 5

I understand that Garmin chose to use Titanium grade 2 in their Marq series.

According to what I've read, this material can be scratched easily as opposed to Titanium grade 5 which is stronger.

Any idea why Garmin chose to use grade 2? Maybe the price range of grade 5 Titanium watches is higher then ~2000$ price range?

Or maybe grade 2 is consider more luxurious? or looks better?

It is definitely grade2 titanium, I was searching for it and it is mentioned in several sources, I saw it also at some Garmin page, however, I can not serve you with exact citation. Also the term raw titanium…

I would not think that price is the issue in this case. If class 5 is more expensive it would for 50gram probably be less than a few euro. My guess is that it’s because of the laser marking on the bezel.

Grade 2 is pure titanium, Grade 5 is an alloy which is a little harder than Grade 2. Nothing to see here.

In short, like user 713 replied before.. Grade 2 is pure, while grade 5 is alloy. Grade 5 is also much harder and not easily worked with while grade 2 is softer and easily worked with, perhaps intended by Garmin for the bezel work like jonhand suggested.

Some watch purist like pure titanium, just like some like pure gold. Unfortunately, like pure gold, it is softer

Whilst 7135538 has completely captured my initial reaction, my second is 'How on earth are people commenting that Garmin have used one grade of Titanium vs another?' I can't find a spec anywhere that says it's grade 2, grade 5 or grade whatever. Who is making this stuff up?

So not an official Garmin source or with a reference back to a verifiable official source that has tested the materials. So it could just be the reviewer’s assumption or may be something a Garmin rep told him, we just don’t know and therefore it can’t be taken as fact.

Also the term raw titanium is equal to grade 2 Ti. Grade 5 Ti is alloy with vanadium and molybden, it is harder, stronger, more expensive and more difficult to work with. Grade2 Ti is just a little bit softer than 316 stainless steal. Scratches are usually superficial on a superficial lawyer of TiO. They can be left alone and "heal by themselves" or can be easily removed.....
