Garmin instict started to measure heart rate data during swimming activity.
Possible that's caused by a bug because Garmin never wanted to put in that feature so far....
Today (4 of October 2020) I started an open open water activity with my instict knowing that it doesn't record HR during this type of activity.
I was supriced when I sync the watch with a garmin connect. It had record HR data from my wrist and actually it was very precise due to dlthe fact that the swim was only for 155 meters.
Then I opened again the activity and the Optical HR stopped, then I turned to another activity and again at swimming and it was working again for the swimming, so for that reason I believe that garmin didn't want to put that inside but they did it accidently during another update...
Maybe you can try it at your watches too!
