Instinct Solar - 16.50 - disable altimeter auto-calibration

Is it possible to disable automatic calibration whatsoever? I remember that it was possible in FW 16.00 (maybe even in 16.43/16.44), but since upgrading to 16.50 I can't prevent Instinct from messing up my altitude every night. It most probably uses DEM data which are close enough to my real altitude (116m DEM vs 118m "real"), but I live ~11m over the ground. I keep setting altitude to 129m when I'm at home, just to find it resets back to 116m the next morning. I tried to set auto calibration as "off" (which seems to be "nightly" in 16.50) and "on" (without doing any activity) and it behaves the same. I used to manually calibrate altimeter every few days once it drifted away too much, but now I have to do it daily.. Anyone aware of a way how to force Instinct or Garmin connect to remember my altitude @ home value? Does Garmin really expect that all people are living in houses on the ground floor?

Thanks!

  • I like to keep my altimeter at 0 to get the real atmospheric pressure for barometer values (QFE). If I disable all possible deviations, the watch stays at sea level until it restarts. This is quite convenient for me as long as there are no forced reboots like in context with pool swimming activities.

  • I like to keep my altimeter at 0 to get the real atmospheric pressure for barometer values (QFE).

The Barometer widget is designed to map the QNH. Not QFE. That is, the values in the widget go through a mathematical calculation and are filtered. To display the real QFE, you need raw data. This is not what the Instinct Barometer provides.

  • interesting. how do you know that?

  • To answer myself - I performed forced reboot, recalibrated altimeter manually, waited for a GPS fix near the window, made sure that altimeter is still correct. Today was the first morning where my altimeter stayed at correct altitude and wasn't reset during night. Let's see what happens during next couple of days.. Slight smile

Edit: scratch that, it still resets to the wrong value over night, so the problem remains

  • how do you know that?

Apart from the Instinct, I have also been using fenix watches since 2016. In this respect, both watches work the same.

I am not an app developer, but have helped several CIQ developers test the apps over the years. This has also given me some insight into how the Barometer works.

  • Thanks for your explanation. I noticed, that apart of my let us call it virtual QFE, other values are resetted during night, exactly like the author mentioned. So my unfortunately not real QFE is in my opinion the only altitude that remains unchanged during nights, which is only a quite bad compromise, I think.

  • I most probably found a workaround - I removed location permission from Garmin connect app on the phone, so it can't do the nightly shenanigans anymore. So far no side effects (I don't use weather data on the watch). DEM calibration still works fine and altimeter stays at the right value.

  • Good idea! Thanks for follow up
